Ravens beat 49ers 16-6 in duel of Harbaughs (AP)
BALTIMORE ? John Harbaugh could have gloated. He could have bragged.
Instead, the Baltimore Ravens coach played the role of gracious big brother after he bested Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers 16-6 Thursday night in the first NFL game featuring brothers as opposing head coaches.
The Ravens (8-3) tied a franchise record with nine sacks to end San Francisco's eight-game winning streak.
"To the 49ers and to my brother, I can't tell you enough how proud I am of him and the job he's done building that football team," John said of Jim, a rookie NFL coach. "That's a football team. The way they're built, it's pretty hard to figure out a way to beat them."
John, 49, and Jim, 47, grew up dueling each other in all sorts of games. This, however, was the first time their sibling rivalry was displayed on a national stage.
During the final minute, John got a Gatorade bath from his players ? twice. After the game ended, the brothers hugged at midfield.
"There's a saying that says, `As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another,'" Jim said. "And I have to say my brother John is the sharpest iron I've ever encountered in my life."
The Ravens chased, hindered and battered 49ers quarterback Alex Smith for much of the night despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the team's leading tackler and spiritual leader. Lewis was inactive for a second straight game with a foot injury.
Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 140 yards and an interception, and San Francisco (9-2) was held without a touchdown for the first time this season. Smith never could get into a rhythm against an aggressive defense that rarely let him set up in the pocket.
"It's tough to get ready for a defense like that in a short week. They do so many things," he said. "They're a great front. At home with the crowd noise, they were teeing off."
Terrell Suggs had three sacks for first-place Baltimore, which moved a half-game ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.
"That's always the game plan, to get after the quarterback, but I think the No. 1 game plan was to win the Harbaugh Bowl," Suggs said. "Coach tried to downplay it ? act like it's not me against my brother, this is the Ravens vs. the 49ers and let's get win No. 8 and make sure our destiny is in our own hands ? but it was really important to him. We as a team went out there and really wanted to win for him."
Baltimore broke a 6-6 tie with a 76-yard, 16-play drive that lasted more than 7 1/2 minutes and ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to tight end Dennis Pitta with 14:56 left. Flacco went 4 for 4 for 34 yards and a touchdown on third down during the drive.
"When you have that kind of game plan ? your line being so efficient on third downs ? you have to come through," Flacco said.
Billy Cundiff wrapped up the scoring with his third field goal, a 39-yarder with 4:16 remaining.
In a game dominated by both defenses, Flacco finished 15 for 23 for 161 yards and Ray Rice ran for 59 yards on 21 carries.
The 49ers began the third quarter with a 13-play drive that lasted 7 1/2 minutes and produced a 52-yard field goal by David Akers for a 6-6 tie. The key play was an 18-yard completion from Smith to Michael Crabtree on a third-and-17 from the San Francisco 26.
The Ravens responded with their lone touchdown drive of the game.
Baltimore sacked Smith four times in the first half and picked off a pass in taking a 6-3 lead.
The Ravens took the opening kickoff and moved 55 yards ? 38 of them on a pair of Flacco-to-Anquan Boldin completions ? before Cundiff kicked a 39-yard field goal.
Late in the first quarter, a 20-yard completion from Smith to tight end Vernon Davis set up a 45-yard field goal by Akers.
The 49ers blew a chance to take the lead when Frank Gore was penalized for a chop block on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Ted Ginn, who got behind Cary Williams deep down the middle.
Neither team had much luck moving the ball until San Francisco's Tarell Brown was called for pass interference on a long pass to Torrey Smith. The 50-yard penalty put the ball at the 15, and although the Ravens turned it into a first-and-goal at the 4, they had to settle for a 23-yard field goal with 2:51 left in the half.
NOTES: Baltimore has won all six home games this season and 15 of 16. ... Gore finished with 39 yards on 14 carries. ... How NASA's Curiosity Mars rover could help future searches for life
NASA's new Mars rover, dubbed Curiosity, is designed to investigate Mars's chemical environment, paving the way for future missions to search for past or present life on the Red Planet.?
NASA's new state-of-the-art Mars rover, which is slated to launch into space on Saturday (Nov. 26), will investigate whether the Martian environment is ? or ever was ? habitable. While the ambitious mission is expected to help researchers understand the Red Planet better than ever before, it is also a key stepping stone in the wider search for alien life in the universe, scientists said.
Skip to next paragraphThe Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), or Curiosity rover, is equipped with a suite of instruments that will allow scientists to study features on the Martian surface and the surrounding environment to piece together clues of the?planet's potential habitability.
"We have to remember that any life that exists somewhere else will be a function of that environment," Pamela Conrad, deputy principal investigator for the Mars Science Laboratory, said in a news briefing today (Nov. 22). "Mars Science Laboratory is off to study that environment. Hopefully we'll walk away with a lot more information about what environments look like on the surface of Mars. I like to say it's extraterrestrial real estate appraisal."
Curiosity is carrying 10 instruments that will allow it to dig, drill and analyze rock samples. The vehicle also has the ability to fire a laser at rocks, creating a cloud of plasma that can be scanned to reveal its chemical makeup.
As the rover rolls along the surface of Mars, it will also be able to sniff the air to help scientists paint a clearer picture of the?Martian environment, Conrad said.
The Mars Science Laboratory is not a life detection mission, but by understanding the chemical environment of Mars, and by searching for signs of habitability in the planet's geological history, researchers can gain additional insight into whether and how microbial life could exist on the Red Planet. But, like any mission of exploration, it's impossible to say in advance what discoveries will be made.
"Do we anticipate that we'll learn a lot about Mars? Absolutely," Conrad said. "Do we know specifically what that will be? We have no clue."
Still, the car-size Curiosity rover should help clarify whether or not Mars ever hosted life. In addition, the mission is also an important stepping stone for other?searches for alien life.
"The game is afoot, the search is on and MSL is taking a very important step and part of it is developing a strategy for narrowing that search," Mary Voytek, director of NASA's astrobiology program, said.
Ultimately, scientists said the search for life elsewhere in the universe is of fundamental importance to humankind.??
"It'sthe argument that is made for exploration anywhere," said Catharine Conley, a planetary protection officer at NASA. "We don't know what we're going to find, but if we don't go there, we're not going to find it."

Report: Senior Indian Maoist rebel leader killed (AP)
NEW DELHI ? A senior Maoist rebel leader was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in eastern India, news reports said Friday.
Press Trust of India quoted a top paramilitary official as saying the operation that killed Kishenji, who uses just one name, was "clean and successful."
The government has called the rebels, who are now spread across 20 of India's 28 states, the country's greatest internal security threat.
Another official, Vineet Goel, told PTI that Thursday's operation was planned after police and paramilitary forces received word that rebels were holed up in the Burisole forest in West Bengal state.
Police told The Associated Press that Kishenji's niece and mother have yet to identify the body. Varavara Rao, a poet and longtime Maoist sympathizer, told NDTV news channel that Kishenji was killed in a staged gunbattle.
Kishenji was one of several leaders of the Maoists. He was born in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and had been part of the rebels since the 1980s. Authorities had blamed him for a brazen attack on a security camp that killed 24 men in West Bengal last year.
Inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, the rebels have fought for more than four decades demanding land and jobs for farmers and the poor. They have tapped into the rural poor's growing anger at being left out of the country's economic gains.
They have blown up trains, set up land mines to kill government officials and attacked government buildings to get their message heard. The movement has an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 fighters.
Several local governments in the worst-affected states in central and eastern India are unable to function because of rebel attacks.

CULIACAN, Mexico ? The governor of Sinaloa state, home to Mexico's most powerful drug cartel, said Thursday that his three children are living abroad for their safety.
Gov. Mario Lopez Valdez says police have overheard cartel members on radio frequencies discussing how to kidnap one of his relatives or close associates, in the hope of exchanging them for an arrested cartel operator.
"We took the necessary measures, to the extent that we can, in order not to be in a vulnerable situation, and to be able to fulfill our duties on the issue of security," Lopez Valdez told reporters.
The statement represents a rare admission of the personal dangers faced by Mexico's governors.
None has been killed by drug gangs. But in 2010, the former governor of the Pacific state of Colima, Silverio Cavazos Ceballos, was killed by armed men a year after he left office. That same year, the leading candidate for the governorship of the border state of Tamaulipas was assassinated.
Sinaloa is considered particularly dangerous because it is the cradle of Sinaloa cartel.
Lopez Valdez said his children live abroad as a security measure "to avoid having to mourn things," but he did not specify where they were.
The governor also said that a series of 24 killings in Sinaloa Wednesday were part of disputes between drug factions.

Netflix shares hurt by bleak 2012 outlook (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Netflix Inc's shares dropped as much as 7 percent on Tuesday after it warned of a loss for 2012, a move the prompted several Wall Street analysts to cut their price targets for the online video and DVD rental company.
Analysts at Caris, Janney, UBS and Wedbush Securities all slashed their price targets for Netflix, citing the company's outlook. It had previously said it anticipates a loss only in the first quarter of 2012.
The problem, it said, is that it has recently lost a "significant" number of customers, who objected to Netflix's decisions to raise its prices and split up its streaming and DVD business -- an idea it later dropped.
Shares were down 4 percent in morning Nasdaq trade, after dropping as much as 7 percent to $69 in the session's opening minutes.
"If we do not reverse the negative consumer sentiment toward our brand, and if we continue to experience significant customer cancellations and a decline in subscriber additions, our results of operations including our cash flow will be adversely impacted," it said.
Until it can start adding more net subscribers, it said quarterly revenue would be relatively flat. For 2012, that means it will post a loss, it said.
Netflix's outlook adjustment came in a late filing on Monday, which said it had raised $400 million in new capital by selling convertible debt to long-time backer Technology Crossover Ventures and stock to funds managed by T.Rowe Price.
Most analysts welcomed the extra capital infusion as a form of insurance as Netflix invests in buying and creating more programing for its online video subscribers.
The Los Gatos, California, company has had a troubled second half of the year during which it has lost about two-thirds of its market value since its shares touched a high of nearly $300 in July.
There have been a range of strategic missteps that have led to more recent questions about its financial strength in the face of rising content costs and competitive pressures from the traditional cable and satellite TV companies.
Some on Wall Street appeared unhappy that Netflix did not provide cleared 2012 guidance on its October 24 quarterly conference call. In a research note, Lazard analyst Barton Crockett said investor relations had called the decision to update its guidance in the filing a "clarification" to its comments on the earlier conference call.
"At that time, Netflix punted when asked if they see losses for the full year," Crockett said of last month's call.

Egypt stock market drops on political unrest (AP)
CAIRO ? Egypt's benchmark stock index extended its decline for a second consecutive day and airport officials reported a sharp drop Monday in international passenger arrivals as deadly clashes in the capital cast fresh doubts about the country's political stability days before pivotal parliamentary elections.
The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index closed 3.99 percent weaker, at 3,862 points, according to the exchange's Web site. The drop surpassed the previous day's 2.4 percent decline sparked by clashes between security forces and protesters in Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square, and pushed the index's year-to-date losses to almost 46 percent.
The protesters are demanding that the ruling military council announce a date for transition to a civilian government. At least 24 people have been killed in the clashes since Saturday across Egypt, the overwhelming majority in Cairo, according to a morgue official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian pound flirted near the 6 pounds to the U.S. dollar mark, reaching levels largely unseen since the height of the Jan. 25 uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak. The pound, which had hit about 5.99 pounds to the dollar, pulled back to around 5.973 pounds to the dollar later in the day. Also, Egypt's 5-year credit default swaps, the cost of insuring the country's debt, stood at 525 basis points compared to 466 basis points on Nov. 18, according to data from financial information provider Markit.
The depreciation pressures, coupled with the soaring debt costs, underscored the country's economic crunch which has been exacerbated by a nearly 40 percent erosion in net international reserves since December.
"Egypt has a massive external financing risk over the next year, and these political events are making matters worse," said Said Hirsh, Mideast economist with Capital Economics in London. "Any kind of political uncertainty is making the situation worse."
The uprising that ousted Mubarak in mid-February sparked a tide of optimism in the country, with millions expecting that nearly three-decades of authoritarian rule best defined by a system of crony capitalism and outright nepotism would be replaced by a transparent, democratic system that offered them at least the opportunity to succeed.
But those expectations have proven far greater than the reality on the ground as mass protests battered the economy, with key foreign revenue sources tourism and foreign investment taking a beating since the start of the year.
Net international reserves were down to $22 billion by the end of October, from $36 billion by the end of last year, according to Central Bank of Egypt figures. At least some of that has gone to supporting the Egyptian currency.
The unrest comes days before parliamentary elections ? the first since Mubarak's ouster. The vote is seen as a milestone in Egypt's transition to a democratic system, but the violence has raised questions about whether the various parties will pull out.
Reflecting the impact of the unrest, airport officials in Cairo said at least two airlines canceled flights from Italy and Syria on Monday because of the unrest in the capital and that the number of arrivals from European nations plunged between 30 to 50 percent. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media.
The cancellations and the drop in arrivals was reminiscent of the mass departures of foreigners from Egypt in the first days of the uprising ? an exodus that heralded the start of the decline of the country's vital tourism sector for the year.
The IMF is projecting Egypt's economic growth to come in at an anemic 1.2 percent this year compared to about 5 percent in 2010.
With key revenue sources hammered the interim government has had to rely on foreign aid, as well as selling treasury bills and bonds to raise money. But yields on two billion, 266-day, treasury bills auctioned on Sunday surged to 14.7 percent ? significantly higher than the 1.5 percent interest rate the IMF had requested on a roughly $3 billion loan it offered the government over the summer.
Egyptian officials turned down that offer, but are now re-evaluating it given the climbing yields they are forced to pay to attract interest in their securities.
"The problem is that this is an interim government, and it's questionable how much power it has with the military council making the decision," said Hirsh. "There's basically no clear economic policy direction on the part of the interim government."
The decision to turn down the IMF loan and turn to T-bills to raise money at higher yields reflects "this sort of contradiction in policy," he said. "It's doesn't make any sense."

'It's Santa's Workshop, but all Gaga stuff,' DJ White Shadow tells MTV News of over-the-top Barneys display in New York.

On Monday night, Lady Gaga launched the holiday-themed Gaga's Workshop at Barneys in New York. It was an event that brought out some of the city's biggest fashionistas, many members of the Haus of Gaga (including the event's curator and Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti) and the Mother Monster herself.
DJ White Shadow, who produced several tracks on Gaga's Born This Way, was on hand providing tunes for the big shindig.
"They spent a lot of time on the installations," he told MTV News on Tuesday afternoon (November 22). "I didn't understand what it was until I walked up to it. It's Santa's Workshop, but all Gaga stuff. But the windows are super cool. They had a video installation, they had a mockup of the motorcycle on the [Born This Way] cover that's spinning all the time and a Gaga crystal kingdom."
While the party and Gaga's presence made for a hectic night, White Shadow kept partygoers dancing without any chaos. "I totally skirted around all the insanity," he said. "[Gaga] went one way and I went the other way. I saw her parents and some friends I haven't seen in a while.
"There was some very fashionable people there," he added. "There was a guy that had a mop on his head — like, legit, it looked like a mop — and then there was people like 17 feet tall with a nipple hanging out, and then there's me, someone who hasn't shaved in five days," he joked.
At Gaga's Workshop, there are many products to pick from, ranging from chocolates to leather jackets, but there was one item that really caught White Shadow's eye.
"I just was perusing the goods ... and there were some books that were her favorite books, and they have a special Barneys cover. I was trying to grab small things," he recalled. "But there's these hulking giant candles [in the shape of Gaga's head] that you light from the top. It's like you light the candles in the back and then the wax drips down through the eyes of the candle. So I was pretty impressed with it. I definitely procured one."

A Very Gaga Holiday will include four songs that will also be featured on ABC's "A Very Gaga Thanksgiving," airing Thursday. What tracks made the final cut? "White Christmas" and "Orange Colored Sky," as well as the BTW tracks "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory," the latter of which White Shadow produced.

LONDON (AP) ? The mother of a murdered girl told a British courtroom Monday she believed her missing 13-year-old was still alive once she reached the girl's previously full voice mailbox ? only to learn later that her daughter's phone had been hacked into by a tabloid.
Sally Dowler said when she could finally leave a message on her daughter Milly's voice mail weeks after the girl disappeared in 2002, she shouted "She's picked up the voice mails! ... She's alive!"
In fact, messages on Milly's phone had been deleted by someone working for the News of the World tabloid while the Dowlers and the police were still searching for Milly, who was later found dead.
The Dowlers were the first in a string of high-profile witnesses, including celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Sienna Miller and author J.K. Rowling, testifying before a judicial inquiry set up by Prime Minister David Cameron on how they were followed, photographed, entrapped and harassed by tabloid journalists.
The Dowlers also described their shock and anger when a private walk to retrace their missing daughter's last steps was secretly photographed by the tabloid.
Sally Dowler said she and her husband Bob had no idea they were being observed as they walked near their home in May 2002, but days later saw the pictures in the News of the World.
"It just felt like such an intrusion into a really, really private grief moment," she said. The couple said they later realized that their own phone, as well as their daughter's, had been hacked.
The Dowlers took the stand together and spoke in quiet, composed voices during their 30 minutes of nationally televised testimony. They described a tense July meeting with media mogul Rupert Murdoch, owner of the now shuttered News of the World, when he apologized for the hacking.
"It was a very tense meeting," Sally Dowler said. "He was very sincere."
Cameron set up the inquiry into media ethics in the wake of a still-evolving scandal over phone hacking in Britain. Murdoch shut down the tabloid in July after evidence emerged that it had routinely eavesdropped on the voice mails of public figures, celebrities and even crime victims in its search for scoops.
More than a dozen News of the World journalists and editors have been arrested, and several senior Murdoch executives have resigned over the still-evolving scandal. Two top London police officers were forced to resign, along with Cameron's top media adviser.
The inquiry, led by judge Brian Leveson, could recommend major changes to the way the media in Britain is regulated.
The second witness was journalist and novelist Joan Smith, whose phone was hacked while she was in a relationship with a politician, Denis MacShane. Smith said she was shocked when police told her that her details had been found in the notebooks of private eye Glenn Mulcaire, who worked for the News of the World and was jailed in 2007 for phone hacking.
"I don't think I'm somebody whose private life would be of much interest to the reading public," she said. "This could happen to almost anybody. That's the astonishing thing. More police departments look to tune public out

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Police departments around the country are working to shield their radio communications from the public as cheap, user-friendly technology has made it easy for anyone to use handheld devices to keep tabs on officers responding to crimes.
The practice of encryption has grown more common from Florida to New York and west to California, with law enforcement officials saying they want to keep criminals from using officers' internal chatter to evade them. But journalists and neighborhood watchdogs say open communications ensure that the public receives information that can be vital to their safety as quickly as possible.
D.C. police moved to join the trend this fall after what Chief Cathy Lanier said were several incidents involving criminals and smartphones. Carjackers operating on Capitol Hill were believed to have been listening to emergency communications because they were only captured once police stopped broadcasting over the radio, she said. And drug dealers at a laundromat fled the building after a sergeant used open airwaves to direct other units there ? suggesting, she said, that they too were listening in.
"Whereas listeners used to be tied to stationary scanners, new technology has allowed people ? and especially criminals ? to listen to police communications on a smartphone from anywhere," Lanier testified at a D.C. Council committee hearing this month. "When a potential criminal can evade capture and learn, 'There's an app for that,' it's time to change our practices."
The transition has put police departments at odds with the news media, who say their newsgathering is impeded when they can't use scanners to monitor developing crimes and disasters. Journalists and scanner hobbyists argue that police departments already have the capability to communicate securely and should be able to adjust to the times without reverting to full encryption. And they say alert scanner listeners have even helped police solve crimes.
"If the police need to share sensitive information among themselves, they know how to do it," Phil Metlin, news director of WTTG-TV, in Washington, said at the council hearing. "Special encrypted channels have been around for a long time; so have cellphones."
It's impossible to quantify the scope of the problem or to determine if the threat from scanners is as legitimate as police maintain ? or merely a speculative fear. It's certainly not a new concern ? after all, hobbyists have for years used scanners to track the activities of their local police department from their kitchen table.
David Schoenberger, a stay-at-home dad from Fredericksburg, Va., and scanner hobbyist, said he understands Lanier's concerns ? to a point.
"I think they do need to encrypt the sensitive talk groups, like the vice and narcotics, but I disagree strongly with encrypting the routine dispatch and patrol talk groups. I don't think that's right," he said. "I think the public has a right to monitor them and find out what's going on around them. They pay the salaries and everything."
There's no doubt that it's increasingly easy to listen in on police radios.
One iPhone app, Scanner 911, offers on its website the chance to "listen in while police, fire and EMS crews work day & night." Apple's iTunes' store advertises several similar apps. One promises to keep users abreast of crime in their communities.
Though iPhones don't directly pick up police signals, users can listen to nearly real-time audio from police dispatch channels through streaming services, said Matthew Blaze, director of the Distributed Systems Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania and a researcher of security and privacy in computing and communications systems.
The shift to encryption has occurred as departments replace old-fashioned analog radios with digital equipment that sends the voice signal over the air as a stream of bits and then reconstructs it into high-quality audio. Encrypted communication is generally only heard by listeners with an encryption key. Others might hear silence or garbled talk, depending on the receiver's technology.
The cost of encryption varies.
The Nassau County, N.Y., police department is in the final stages of a roughly $50 million emergency communications upgrade that includes encryption and interoperability with other law enforcement agencies in the region, said Inspector Edmund Horace. Once the old system is taken down, Horace said, "You would not be able to discern what's being said on the air unless you had the proper equipment."
The Orange County, Fla., sheriff's office expects to be encrypted within months. Several police departments in the county are already encrypted, and more will follow suit to keep officers safe, said Bryan Rintoul, director of emergency communications for the sheriff's office.
In California, the Santa Monica police has been fully encrypted for the past two years and, before that, used a digital radio system that could be monitored with expensive equipment, said spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis.
Still, full encryption is cumbersome, difficult to manage and relatively rare, especially among big-city police departments who'd naturally have a harder time keeping track of who has access to the encryption key, Blaze said.
The more individuals or neighboring police agencies with access, the greater the risk that the secrecy of the system could be compromised and the harder it becomes to ensure that everyone who needs access has it, Blaze said.
Relatively few local police departments are actually encrypted, Blaze said, though some cities have modern radio systems for dispatch that are difficult to monitor on inexpensive equipment. The systems can, however, be intercepted with higher-end scanners.
"I would not be surprised if a lot of departments that do it would switch back to non-encryption. The practical difficulties of trying to maintain an encrypted system at scale start to become apparent," he said.
Some departments have studied full encryption but decided against it, including police in Greenwich, Conn.
"Because we've always retained the ability to encrypt traffic on a case-by-case basis when we need to, in a community like Greenwich, I think the transparency we achieve by allowing people to listen to our radio communications certainly outweighs any security concern we have," said Capt. Mark Kordick.
And some departments have tried to compromise. The Jacksonville, Fla., sheriff's office leased radios to the media, allowing them to listen to encrypted patrol channels. That practice ended last summer out of concern about maintaining the confidentiality of radio transmissions, said spokeswoman Lauri-Ellen Smith.
In D.C., Lanier says the department is stepping up efforts to advise the public of developing crimes through Facebook, Twitter and an email alert system. Officers will use an unencrypted channel starting next month to alert the public to traffic delays, said spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump. But the chief has refused to give radios to media organizations, which continue to assail the encryption.
"What about the truly terrifying crimes?" Metlin, the news director, asked at the hearing. "What if, God forbid, there is another act of terrorism here? It is our jobs to inform the public in times of emergency."
Rick Hansen says he's been listening to police communications since he was an adolescent and says efforts to shut them make government less transparent. The Silver Spring, Md., man says sensitive information could be kept off the airwaves on a selective basis.
"Yes, it's a concern ? and it's something that can be addressed through proper procedures and processes as opposed to turning out the lights on everybody," he said

Russia says Syria's crisis looks like 'civil war' (AP)
BEIRUT ? Syria's allies in Russia called for urgent talks Thursday between Damascus and the opposition, saying an attack by Syrian renegade troops on a government building the previous day looks like the start of a civil war.
Assad is facing severe international isolation stemming from his crackdown on an 8-month-old uprising, which the U.N. estimates has killed 3,500 people. The Arab League suspended Damascus on Wednesday and threatened economic sanctions if the violence continues.
"This is all looking very much like a civil war," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, referring to a pre-dawn attack on Wednesday by the Free Syrian Army, a group of army defectors determined to bring down the regime.
The army defectors fired machine guns and rockets at an Air Force Intelligence base just outside Damascus ? a brazen attack that sent a strong signal the popular uprising could descend into an armed conflict.
Lavrov urged Syrian and opposition forces alike to cease violence and negotiate.
Even as Assad was losing allies in quick succession, Russia and China kept up their long-standing ties with Damascus. In October they vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that threatened sanctions against Syria.
But on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin appeared to suggest China might support a resolution in the future.
"It depends on whether these actions will help to resolve the tensions in Syria and facilitate the resolution of disputes through political dialogue," he said.
He called on both sides in the conflict to work together.
The crisis appears to be spiraling out Assad's control, however, as attacks by army defectors increase and world leaders look at possibilities for a Syrian regime without him.
Germany, Britain and France are pressing for a U.N. resolution that would strongly condemn Syria's human rights violations. The three European countries decided to move ahead with the General Assembly resolution after the Arab League confirmed its suspension.
"We hope it will show Assad just how isolated he is," Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig said of the resolution.
Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said Thursday the world must urgently "hear screams" from Syria and do something to stop the bloodshed.
He said the uprising in Libya got far more worldwide attention about Libya has more oil.
"The lack of reaction to massacres in Syria was causing irreparable wounds in the conscience of humanity," he said.
The growing calls for Assad's ouster are a severe blow to a family dynasty that has ruled Syria for four decades ? and any change to the leadership could transform some of the most enduring alliances in the Middle East and beyond.
Syria's tie to Iran is among the most important relationships in the Middle East, providing the Iranians with a foothold on Israel's border and a critical conduit to Tehran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza.

Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher calling it quits (Reuters)
REUTERS ? Film and television stars Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are splitting up after six years, ending one of the most widely followed May-December romances Hollywood has seen in recent years.
The marriage between Moore, 49, and Kutcher 33, has been in trouble since September when a San Diego woman said she had an affair with Kutcher.
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore said in a statement.
"This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation," she said.
