GCW-Zero - Open Source Retro Gaming Handheld Now Available ...

GCW-Zero-Open-Source-Retro-Gaming-Handheld-Now-Available-Via-KickstarterLast year we brought your attention to a brand new retro gaming handheld in development known as the GCW-Zero. This open-source device promising fantastic emulation and homebrew offerings is now ready to be massed produced - should the demand be met on Kickstarter.

While the team behind the GCW-Zero are able to produce a small quantity of units without the need of Kickstarter, they've very much hoping to gather enough interest and desire to justify the manufacturing of larger quantities. This dream belonging to the GCW-Zero team will materialise should they manage to secure $130,000 within a month.

So what can the GCW-Zero do then? This all new open-source handheld running on a modified version of Linux 3.5, which is already capable of emulating just about every retro game console around, including the more powerful Sony PlayStation too and earlier home computers. Alongside our beloved consoles, a wide range of PC games are running at full speed on the device such as Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. The handheld also comes equipped with shoulder buttons, an analog stick and the familiar button layout you need to get your gaming fix.

15 Social Media Trends By Social Media Marketers For 2013 ...

Campaigns are devised for brands to meet their objectives. To give them the desired shape, most of the times agencies put in their blood and sweat. So, in our ongoing series where we are finding thoughts on social media for 2013 from different facets such as global experts, editors, we thought that this series would be incomplete if we don?t get view points straight from social media marketers who breath this space 24*7. So, here is a list of 14 social media trends from a bunch of social media marketers, that we spoke to recently.

15 Social Media Trends By Social Media Marketers For 2013 image Socialmedia trends for 2013

1. More elaborate. More thought through: Creative driven. Insight driven social ideas. As more people shift from traditional to digital advertising and bring a certain thought process. As more clients spend more money on digital. As more time is spent on social ideas, ideas by and large, on the brands serious about social media will continue to get better.

2. Higher pay at more established firms: More difficulty for social media startups. We?re now in our 5th or 6th year of this industry in India (depending on how you look at it). If you?re looking to be a social media service start up, I imagine its going to be difficult. Most brands worth their salt have established partners. There?s a growing importance of social ? it?s not an ?experiment? anymore. Brands want partners with established credentials. This also means agencies will have to invest in better talent or look to retain their best talent equal to higher pay if you?re good.

Harshil Karia, Co-Founder & Online Strategist at FoxyMoron ? @harshilkaria

3. Blogging to glory: Focus will shift back to blogs from Social Media. Companies will start integrating blogging as a critical part of their digital campaigns. Professional Bloggers will be in demand like never before. Companies will pay more attention to their own blogs too.

4. Video Content becomes the king: Content will be queen, while Video Content will become the king. Like 2012 did for photos & images to change fortunes of companies like Instagram, 2013 will be the same for Videos, Video Content & Video creating and editing companies. Do we foresee some video editing software companies to rise?

Chintan Vora, Co-Founder at Digital Latte - @theunsocialguy

5. Mobile Consumption growth in T2 & T3 cities: Mobile video consumption will explode and not just via 3G networks. The underserved areas (Tier 2 & Tier 3) + rural will drive this demand via preloaded memory cards sold through innovative distribution channels.

6. More branded websites: We will also see brands invest a lot more in their own websites + content platforms rather than sink money on social networks alone. This will fundamentally change the way digital outfits work since a brand website is much more demanding to build and sustain.

Prashanth Challapalli, Business Head at Jack In The Box Worldwide ? @jackinchief

7. Products will go social: To many the NIKE fuel band is just another innovative product. To me it?s an out and out ?Social Product.? This year we will se this trend picking up across industries with products (and services) going social. I would not be surprised to see someone release a social watch or a social car this year. Stay tuned.

8. Retail Will Go Social: Social Media has traditionally been defined as what happens Online. This year we will see a lot of what happens online go on ground. Be prepared to see functional Like and Tweet buttons getting integrated across various retail touch points in an interactive and efficient manner.

Vineet Gupta, Managing Partner at 22feet ? @vinnig

15 Social Media Trends By Social Media Marketers For 2013 image boredom

9. ?Brand Boredom? on Social Media: 2013 would witness the emergence of ?Brand Boredom? on Social Media. Brand boredom will impact those brands which over-use monotonous content strategy and rely heavily on FB posts and Tweets in the name of doing Social Media. Engagement will cease to exist on such pages leading to huge drop out rates of fans/followers which in-turn would see death of such brands on social media.

Daksh Sharma, Director at Iffort ? @indianterrain

10. Integrated marketing: As a marketer, the biggest change we witness is the focus on value generation via mixed marketing mechanisms. So, brands have started to mix things up and integrate a Facebook campaign with a QR code work play or a Twitter activity with an offline hand to it. This would increase as brands are becoming mature about how to use social media and understanding its co-existence with other marketing channels.

Dinesh Juneja, Co-Founder at Creativa India ? @ohteri

11. Social Media in 2013 will be dead. Dead, as we know it: There are too many Indian brands jumping on the bandwagon now, and the space is cluttered. Mere contests will not be enough to drive engagement. In 2013, firms on social media will need to stay ahead of the competition by identifying key business goals, like loyalty. Then engaging the Indian consumer in a specific manner, like via mobile phones, rather than only social media. The bridge between social and real-world relationships will also need to be built.

Shashank Nigam, Founder at SimpliFlying ? @simpliflying

12. Direct ROI in terms of sales and revenue: We?re seeing increasingly with many of our clients, is how social campaigns can give direct ROI in terms of sales and revenue. Branding and marketing managers have had enough of hearing about buzz creation and engagement, and want results in terms of how social is helping drive people to stores or helping someone buy the product or service that they offer. We?ve successfully executed fan-monetization campaigns with tremendous results and this will be expected of other social agencies as well.

Adhvith Dhuddu, Founder at Alivenow ? @adhvith

13. Networks and Social Media Marketing as regular syllabus: More and more brands to opt for Facebook Marketing, the growth of FB users in India to surpass 80 Million by end of 2013. Pinterest to be in demand amongst marketers, due to excessive hype without knowing the true purpose. Google+ will lose it all as a social networking site, just involving celebrities and politicians will not help in the long run.

More and more Indian students to opt for Social Media Marketing in their regular syllabus or demand for it pressurizing management schools for crash courses or a chapter or a specialization by itself.

Sorav Jain, CEO at echoVme ? @SoravJain

14. Emergence of new social networking concept in 2013: Facebook will continue to grow in India and will reach 75 million users by end of 2013. Facebook engagement will come down on an average, until unless Facebook launches new services like full service email or search engine. The users logging into Facebook from mobile will be over 50%. Facebook and Twitter are likely to introduce aggressive advertising models which may include big banners and videos. Social networking and micro-blogging from mobile will increase in a big manner. New social networking apps like fancy, pose and other apps will see traction in India. We will hopefully see a new social networking concept in 2013, as its high time something comes up in this space.

Sandeep Amar, Digital Veteran ? @sancalls

15. The online-offline connect: Marketeers will steadily start moving from a disruption-campaign engagement model on social platforms to getting social media to integrate more strongly with a consumer life cycle. Right from real world marketing activities to brand or product experiences social media will steadily play a larger and better role and participate when a consumer wants it to.

Saurabh Parmar, Founder at Brandlogist Communications ? @saurabhparmar

A mammoth list of trends and some of them I see taking shape already. What trends do you think from the list would start evolving and grow in the Indian social media industry?

Google exec gets look at NKoreans using Internet

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Students at North Korea's premier university showed Google's executive chairman Tuesday how they look for information online: they Google it.

But surfing the Internet that way is the privilege of only a very few in North Korea, whose authoritarian government imposes strict limits on access to the World Wide Web.

Google's Eric Schmidt got a first look at North Korea's limited Internet usage when an American delegation he and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson are leading visited a computer lab at Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang. Other members of the delegation on the unusual four-day trip include Schmidt's daughter, Sophie, and Jared Cohen, director of the Google Ideas think tank.

Schmidt, who is the highest-profile U.S. business executive to visit North Korea since leader Kim Jong Un took power a year ago, has not spoken publicly about the reasons behind the journey to North Korea.

Richardson has called the trip a "private, humanitarian" mission by U.S. citizens and has sought to allay worries in Washington.

North Korea is holding a U.S. citizen accused by Pyongyang of committing "hostile" acts against the state, charges that could carry 10 years in a prison or longer. Richardson told The Associated Press he would speak to North Korean officials about Kenneth Bae's detention and seek to visit the American.

Schmidt and Cohen chatted with students working on HP desktop computers at an "e-library" at the university named after North Korea founder Kim Il Sung. One student showed Schmidt how he accesses reading materials from Cornell University online on a computer with a red tag denoting it as a gift from Kim Jong Il.

"He's actually going to a Cornell site," Schmidt told Richardson after peering at the URL.

Cohen asked a student how he searches for information online. The student clicked on Google ? "That's where I work!" Cohen said ? and then asked to be able to type in his own search: "New York City." Cohen clicked on a Wikipedia page for the city, pointing at a photo and telling the student, "That's where I live."

Kim Su Hyang, a librarian, said students at Kim Il Sung University have had Internet access since the laboratory opened in April 2010. School officials said the library is open from 8 a.m. to midnight, even when school is not in session, like Tuesday.

While university students at Kim Chaek University of Science and Technology and the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology also have carefully monitored Internet access ? and are under strict instructions to access only educational materials ? most North Koreans have never surfed the Web.

Computers at Pyongyang's main library at the Grand People's Study house are linked to a domestic Intranet service that allows them to read state-run media online and access a trove of reading materials culled by North Korean officials. North Koreans with computers at home can also sign up for the Intranet service.

But access to the World Wide Web is extremely rare and often is limited to those with clearance to get on the Internet.

At Kim Chaek University, instructors and students wishing to use the Internet must register first for permission and submit an application with their requests for research online, Ryu Sun Ryol, head of the e-library, said.

But he said it is only a matter of time before Internet use becomes widespread.

"We will start having access to the Internet soon," he said in an interview last month. He said North Korea is in the midst of a major push to expand computer use in every classroom and workplace.

The U.S. delegation's visit takes place as the U.S. pushes to punish North Korea for launching a long-range rocket in December.

Pyongyang celebrates the launch as a peaceful bid to send a satellite into space. The U.S. and other critics, however, condemn it as a covert test of long-range missile technology, and are urging the U.N. Security Council to take action against North Korea.

After arriving in Pyongyang on Monday evening, the group met Tuesday with officials at North Korea's Foreign Ministry.

Richardson, who has traveled to North Korea several times to negotiate the release of detained Americans, was accompanied by Korea expert Kun "Tony" Namkung. He called it "a good, productive but frank meeting," but did not divulge further details about the talks. Namkung has worked as a consultant for The Associated Press.

Schmidt, who oversaw Google's expansion into a global Internet giant, speaks frequently about the importance of providing people around the world with Internet access and technology. Google now has offices in more than 40 countries, including all three of North Korea's neighbors: Russia, South Korea and China, another country criticized for systematic Internet censorship.

He and Cohen have collaborated on a book about the Internet's role in shaping society called "The New Digital Age" that comes out in April.

Using science and technology to build North Korea's beleaguered economy was the highlight of a New Year's Day speech by leader Kim Jong Un.

New red banners promoting slogans drawn from Kim's speech line Pyongyang's snowy streets, and North Koreans are still cramming to study the lengthy speech. It was the first time in 19 years for North Koreans to hear their leader give a New Year's Day speech. During the rule of late leader Kim Jong Il, state policy was distributed through North Korea's three main newspapers.

There was a festive air in Pyongyang for another reason: Kim Jong Un's birthday. Though Jan. 8 is not recognized as a national holiday, like the birthdays of his father and grandfather, and his official birthdate has not been announced, North Koreans acknowledged that it was their leader's birthday Tuesday.

Waitresses at the downtown Koryo Hotel dressed up in sparkly traditional Korean dresses and decorated the lobby with balloons.

News in Brief: Corals beat heat by being prepared

Once waters begin to warm, a study finds, it's too late to adapt

BEATING THE HEAT

Some forms of Acropora hyacinthus coral preempt the effects of warming waters by turning on genes that help them resist heat and stress.

Corals that can survive in warming ocean water may be genetically primed to sweat it out.

Studying reef-building Acropora hyacinthus corals from American Samoa?s Ofu Island, researchers from the Stanford University Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, Calif., found that the activity of hundreds of genes changed when both heat-sensitive and heat-tolerant corals were switched from 29.2? Celsius water to 32.9? C water. But even before getting into hot water, heat-tolerant corals had already turned on 60 genes designed to help combat heat and stress, the researchers report online January 7 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Sensitive corals that bleach in the heat didn?t turn on those heat- and stress-beaters until after temperatures rose. It?s not clear if the heat-tolerant corals face long-term consequences from their constant vigilance against environmental stress. The finding may help researchers better predict how future climate change may affect coral populations.

CES 2013: Wearable Health and Fitness Tracker Roundup - Mac ...

Health monitoring products have recently seen a huge surge in popularity, with offerings like the Jawbone UP and the Nike Fuelband bringing consumer awareness to the connected devices.

Several different companies debuted new wearable fitness tracking devices at CES this year, including Fitbit, Fitbug, Withings, and BodyMedia.

Fitbit Flex

Fitbit, known for its tiny clip-on Fitbit One, announced the Fitbit Flex, which is a wristband that is similar in design to the Jawbone UP.

Like the Fitbit One, The waterproof Flex automatically counts calories burned, distance walked, and steps taken. It can also be used to record food intake and sleep quality, via an app.

Data is sent to a personalized website using Bluetooth Smart, and the band lasts between five and seven days on a single charge. The Flex will be available in Spring 2013 for $100.

Fitbug Orb

Fitbug (via Engadget) is a UK-based company that just debuted its new Fitbug Orb, a small, button-sized activity monitor.

The Orb measures steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, and sleep quality. Like other offerings, the Orb allows for food recording. The Orb is designed to be worn in different accessories, like a belt clip, lanyard, fitness band, or sleep pouch.

Though the Orb has no display, it does use Bluetooth Smart to connect to the iPhone or the iPad. Fitbug's Orb will be available in Spring 2013 for $50.

Withings Smart Activity Tracker

Withings Smart Activity Tracker is a small, clip-on health monitor that is similar in design to the Fitbit One. It measures sleep quality, food intake, movement, and pulse rate, with a touch-sensitive front and a heart rate sensor in the back.

The Activity Tracker also uses Bluetooth Smart to connect to Withings' Health Mate app, and it comes with an estimated two week battery life. Withings Smart Activity Tracker is due before the end of March, and while no retail price has been announced, Withings says that the pricing will be in line with competing products.

BodyMedia CORE 2

BodyMedia CORE 2 is the second iteration of BodyMedia's popular health and fitness tracking band. Like the prior version, the Core 2 captures 5,000 data points per minute, measuring calories burned, exercise intensity, and sleep patterns. It has a three-axis accelerometer in addition to heat flux and galvanic skin response sensors.

The quarter-sized device is designed to fit into a range of fashion-oriented interchangeable straps and cuffs, and connects to BodyMedia's existing apps and web portal using Bluetooth Smart.

The BodyMedia CORE 2 will launch in August of 2013, with additional faceplates, straps, and cuffs coming at a later date. Pricing information is not yet available.

ADHD Is Chemical Soup | ADHD Man of Distraction

The cream of the crop ...

The cream of the crop ?

Distracted? Yes.

Excitable? Oh yeah!

Hyper? Umm ? okay??!?

Punctual? Uuuuuuh ? well ?

Suffering from anxiety? Errr, sometimes ?

We?re all the same, right? Wrong!

Step into the kitchen

We are all different pots of chemical soup simmering on the stove of evolution and environment. We?ve all been seasoned differently. What we share is a cerebral development that gives us all a similar base.

To flog this culinary analogy to its bitter end, if all humans are soup, we belong to the cream soup category of persons with mental health issues.

Soup subtypes

Furthermore, perhaps it?s the cream of potato soups that represent ADHD. But some of us contain onion, while others have chives or garlic and still others have combinations of two or more of those ingredients. Perhaps the onion family represents inattentiveness, the different types represent how that inattentiveness manifests itself in each of us.

And then there?s the bacon. Some of us, after all, are vegetarians while others are omnivores. That simple difference in itself points up the truth of our being different, but back to the analogy. The bacon bits might be our hyperactive behaviour. Some of us drive fast and hard, some of us exercise to the limits of our physique and beyond, some of us hum and vibrate quietly, drumming fingers, bouncing feet and tapping toes. Is that maple cured bacon? Is it smoked? Was it diced and fried? Or was it fried and crumbled? Was it drained or added to the mix, grease and all?

Why all this talk of food? Am I hungry?

Always, but lets look at something more relevant. The human body is a structure that runs on chemical reactions. There are chemicals within us, and there are chemicals we put into ourselves in the form of food and drink.

Some of the chemicals in food are used to create energy by way of well documented chemical processes. Others are used to facilitate the extraction or manufacture of ? you guessed it, still more, needed chemicals for Central Nervous System (CNS) communication.

Just as your computer or your smartphone or tablet runs on electrical impulses, your CNS communication with itself and your body utilize similar chemical and physical reactions.

The best laid genetic plans

We are constructed from a genetic blueprint that is contained in our DNA. No two individuals, with the exception of monozygotic or identical twins, have the same blueprint. And even Identical twins develop differently from the time the zygote splits into two embryos. So no two of us with ADHD are going to be the same chemical soup.

And no two of us experience the environment the same, nor do we experience the same environment. Part of our environment is the things we consume, our food and drink. Additionally, there are activities and consumables that we avail ourselves of, whose effects are not required for maintenance of life. These are the things we use to medicate, either prescribed or not. They alter our reactions to, and production or extraction of, chemicals used for CNS communication.

What are you?

With all the differences between you and I and the next person, genetics, environment, upbringing, it?s a wonder we recognize each other as the same species.

Yet we do. And further more, we often recognize and sympathize with those who share our diagnosis, the members of this tribe who have ADHD, our family.

Thank goodness we are not all alike. But thank that goodness again, that we are enough alike that we can listen to each others woes, cry on each others shoulders, laugh at each others foibles (in an empathetic way), share each others successes, and even offer each other advice.

We?ve got each other, if little else, right?

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better.

Google executive chairman arrives in NKorea

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Google's executive chairman is starting a visit to North Korea that has prompted controversy and fascination.

Eric Schmidt of Google arrived Monday in a country considered to have the world's most restrictive Internet policies. He is part of a delegation that includes former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

It is the first trip by an executive from the California-based Internet search provider to North Korea.

Also on the trip is Jared Cohen, director of the Google Ideas think tank. Cohen is a former State Department policy adviser.

Washington has criticized the trip as not "helpful." North Korea has drawn criticism for launching a long-range rocket last month.

Richardson calls the trip a "private humanitarian mission" but it's not clear what the group hopes to accomplish during the visit.
