See more in our gallery: "3D printer reveals mathematical beauty ? and surprise"
ARCHIMEDES was at the cutting-edge of Ancient Greek technology but he might have increased his ability to engage with ordinary folk had he access to a 3D printer.
One of the polymath's favourite proofs was showing mathematically that a sphere that fits exactly inside a cylinder fills two thirds of its volume. A representation of this was displayed on his tomb.
Now, to mark the 2300th anniversary of his birth, Elizabeth Slavkovsky and Oliver Knill of Harvard University have used a 3D printer to create an object of the precise dimensions needed to demonstrate the insight visually.
They printed a slightly different version of the proof - a hollow hemisphere supported above a cylinder which contains a cone that takes up one third of the cylinder's volume (pictured below). Fill the hemisphere with water and it drains into the cylinder, filling it exactly to the brim. Using a hemisphere means you can see the water drain, making it easy to grasp what Archimedes proved (arxiv.org/abs/1301.5027).
The pair reckon that 3D printers - which make it easy to create objects based on equations - could transform mathematics education. Slavkovsky has helped students print personalised mathematical objects. "It gave them a tangible thing to consider," she says.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Beyonce answered critics of her Inauguration Day performance the best way she could ? with another sterling performance of the national anthem.
The difference?
On Thursday, it was live: She admitted during her Super Bowl news conference that when she performed for President Barack Obama and the nation, she decided to sing to a prerecorded track because she didn't have time to practice. Calling herself a self-proclaimed "perfectionist," she said wanted the day to go off without a hitch.
"I practice until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra," she said, adding that she was also emotional that day. "Due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration, and I wanted to make him and my country proud, so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I'm very proud of my performance."
It was the superstar's first public comments on what has become known as "Beyonce-gate."
Her rendition of the anthem was critically praised, but was scrutinized less than a day later when a representative from the U.S. Marine Band said Beyonce was lip-syncing ? merely mouthing the words to a pre-recorded track ? and the band's accompanying performance was taped. Shortly after, the group backed off its initial statement and said no one could tell if she was singing live or not.
With the controversy growing each day, and everyone from politicians to other entertainers weighing in, the inauguration performance threatened to overshadow her planned Super Bowl halftime show. So the 31-year-old, wearing a tight, cream mini-dress, addressed the issue as soon as she took to the podium Thursday afternoon.
She asked everyone to stand, and, with an image of the American flag behind her, performed a live rendition of the national anthem that mirrored the one on Inauguration Day. After, she said with a laugh: "Any questions?"
Despite her performance, there were.
When pressed about whether any sound was coming from her voice when she sang for the president, she said she was singing along to the track and not mimicking (though it's unclear how audible her voice was). And when asked if she would be singing live at the Super Bowl, she said: "I will absolutely be singing live.
"This is what I was born to do."
She added later: "I always sing live. ... The inauguration was unfortunately a time where I could not rehearse with the orchestra, actually because I was rehearsing for the Super Bowl. So that was always the plan."
Beyonce also got a chance to talk more in detail about the reason why she was in New Orleans ? to perform at the halftime show. Calling it one of her career aspirations, she said when she arrived at the Superdome, she was so moved by the experience she took her shoes off and ran on the field, taking in the history at the famed venue.
"It really makes me emotional," she said. "When I am no longer here, it's what they're gonna show."
Beyonce has teased photos and video of herself preparing for the show, which will perhaps be the biggest audience of her career. Last year, Madonna's halftime performance was the most-watched Super Bowl halftime performance ever, with an average of 114 million viewers. It garnered more viewers than the game itself, which was the most-watched U.S. TV event in history.
But she would not give anything more away about the performance. While a Destiny's Child reunion was shot down by Michelle Williams, who is starring in a production of "Fela!", the third Destiny's Child member, Kelly Rowland, is in town. Beyonce laughed off questions of whether Rowland or Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z, would join her on stage.
"I can't give you any details, sorry," she said.
She also would not reveal her set list, though acknowledged she was having a hard time trying to "condense a career into 12 minutes."
Before the news conference, Beyonce's "Life is But A Dream" was shown to the media. The documentary about the star's life features her talking in-depth about intimate details of her life, including suffering a miscarriage; it will air on HBO on Feb. 16.
In it, she also reveals more of her 1-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, whom she called her inspiration.
"I feel like my daughter changed me and changed my life and has given me so much purpose," she said. She added that she was counting down until 9 p.m. Sunday, when her performance would be over ? and she could be reunited with Blue Ivy.

MyFeePlan.com will start to offer military records along with continued service of other valuable public records.
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) January 31, 2013
MyFeePlan has expanded the scope of their public records database to include military records, company officials said yesterday.?We have had numerous requests from our customers to make military records available to them,? said company spokesman Josh Fraser. ?It took us some time to add them to the database, but they are now there and we are happy to have the chance to find a new way to satisfy our customers.?
MyFeePlan is a public document search company. In the past they have offered arrest records, warrant checks, driving records checks, sex offender checks, and vehicle history reports to the general public.
?This is just one more way for us to make sure that information that is supposed to be public remains available to the public," Fraser said. ?Your tax dollars were used to generate these records, so you should be able to have access to them.?
Fraser said there were a variety of reasons that people may want to use a military records check.
?Maybe you've lost touch with an old army buddy and want to locate him,? Fraser said. ?Or maybe someone has applied for a job at your company and claims to have a stellar military record. Wouldn't you want to find out for sure if they are telling the truth, or if they left the military for less than honorable reasons??
The company said that as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to wind down and soldiers come home, he expects there the demand for military records checks to continue to grow.
?The people asked for them and we've found a way to give it to them,? he said.

Will opposition from his fellow Republicans doom Chuck Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary? Maybe not, if you listen closely to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The Kentucky lawmaker told Yahoo News in an exclusive interview that Hagel had strong opinions and quite a bit to explain. But McConnell called the former Nebraska senator a "smart, capable guy" who deserved a full hearing before the Armed Services Committee on Thursday.
"He?s had a lot of opinions. He was particularly opposed to much of what the Bush administration was doing in foreign policy. That didn?t mean he wasn?t a capable senator or a forceful advocate," McConnell told Yahoo News Chief Washington Correspondent Olivier Knox. Hagel, who served two terms in the Senate from 1997 to 2009, won two purple hearts in Vietnam, where he served as an enlisted Army infantry officer.
Hagel's years in the Senate haven't endeared him to many Republican lawmakers still smarting over his outspoken criticism of the Iraq war even after he voted to authorize the U.S. invasion. Hagel's position on the war sealed his reputation as a party outsider and led him to lend tacit support to President Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Hagel has been criticized for opposing unilateral U.S. sanctions against Tehran?a position he has since changed. He has also raised questions about his support for Israel and at one point criticized the "Jewish lobby" for holding such sway in Washington.
Some Republican senators have suggested they will try to block Hagel's confirmation, including Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a member of the Armed Services Committee.
McConnell told Yahoo News that he and other GOP senators are reserving judgment on whether to support Hagel to allow the confirmation hearings to play out.
"He has taken some rather controversial positions over the years, he?s going to have an opportunity to explain those views," McConnell said.
Knox read from an interview McConnell gave in 2007 where he called Hagel an "indispensable" Republican whose views on Iraq had largely proven correct.
"He's certainly been an outspoken advocate for his point of view and that?s exactly what I was saying," McConnell said. "That?s a little different from saying it was a point of view I shared or that other people shared."
Despite Democratic control of the Senate, Hagel needs at least some support from Republicans to ward off a potential filibuster.
Olivier Knox's complete interview with Sen. McConnell will be released Friday morning, Feb. 1 on Yahoo News.
