It Is Better To Buy Your Gaming Computer Than Building

Building a computer may seem like a simple process. In essence, it's fitting several different parts into a shiny black box and turning it on. However for a first time builder, problems may arise that you won't necessary be able to fix yourself. Common problems that could occur include motherboard bios errors, incorrect cables fitting and problems when installing the operating system. These are problems that a system builder would come across every day, but they will have the knowledge to fix it themselves. Welcome Cloe, Sasha, Jade, and Yasmin. They are the four original Bratz dolls that made it big for MGA. Unlike Barbie who is a full grown adult, the Bratz are teenagers. They look much younger and love fashion, make-up, party, and music. They have heads larger than their bodies. Their eyes are almond-shaped and their faces all dolled-up with eye shadow, lipstick, and blush on. Regardless of whether you did not devote quite a lot of income on it, it can be still funds which was wasted from an application which was ruined due to neglect. If you retain your tools organized and stored in a Rubbermaid storage shed, that may not take place. The sheds are created from a long lasting plastic that will preserve your equipment risk-free in the harsh factors from the seasons. No a lot more ruining flawlessly excellent, and high priced, equipment from year to year. In case you are worried that a plastic storage shed may well seem tacky or from area with your property, consider once again. Rubbermaid storage sheds arrive readily available in a broad wide variety of colours, designs, and styles. You must haven't any dilemma obtaining one particular which fits your flavor and d?cor. And because they can be made from plastic, you are able to rest assured that they will continue being hunting brand new with a bare minimal of common upkeep with soap and water. The game concept of Pokemon is very simple. A Pokemon is a monster on the wild and there are hundreds of them ready to be caught. Players can take care of them and make them their pets. These little monsters have special abilities. With proper caring and training, they would grow to be tamer, stronger, and ready for battle. In Pokemon games, players pit their pets against other trainers. The goal is to determine which trainer is the best. Teamwork is very essential to win tournaments. When you buy a gaming computer or any electrical product from a shop, you always have the reassurance that you can always take the item back if something goes wrong. That may not be the case when buying and installing computer components yourself. Manufacturers warranties on computer components generally last between 1-2 year and claim back can be a nightmare. Ringing surround trying to send back your faulty graphics card may sound easy enough but trying to prove that there is something wrong with it over the phone can be a tricky game to play. If you were to buy a computer form a retailer, you can be rest assured that if any problems arise, you will always be able to send it back to them.

Michael Jackson 'Wasn't Right,' Choreographer Testifies

Kenny Ortega takes stand in doctor Conrad Murray's manslaughter trial.

After dramatic opening statements from prosecutors and the defense, the manslaughter trial of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray began Tuesday with gripping testimony from Jackson's friend and former choreographer, "This is It" documentary director Kenny Ortega.

"My friend wasn't right. ... There was something going on that was deeply troubling me," Ortega said of Jackson's demeanor on June 19, a week before the singer's death. Ortega testified that although Jackson was "very excited" about his upcoming 50-date "This is It" series of comeback shows at London's O2 Arena, the pop icon seemed ill in the days before his passing, missing numerous rehearsals from mid- to late June 2009.

According to TMZ, Ortega said Jackson left rehearsals early on the 19th, after seemingly not eating anything all day, which prompted the director to send an email to Randy Phillips, the CEO of AEG Live, the show's promoter. "There is no one taking responsibility, caring for him on a daily basis," Ortega wrote. "I was feeding him, wrapping him in blankets ... and calling his doctor."

Ortega described Jackson as "incoherent" and said he confronted Murray during an emergency meeting at the singer's home June 20, during which the doctor became upset that the choreographer would not let Jackson rehearse and accused him of trying to act like a doctor. Ortega also said he thought Jackson was abusing drugs and that just four days after appearing so sick, the "Thriller" singer was back at rehearsals June 23 full of energy and ready to work.

AEG co-CEO Paul Gongaware later testified that it was Jackson's idea to extend his string of 10 sold-out shows with an additional 21 gigs to bring the total to 31 in order to beat longtime rival Prince's record of 21 sold-out gigs at the O2. He also said that even after selling out all 50 shows, there was a list of 250,000 people waiting for tickets.

And while Gongaware described Jackson as seeming a little "off" and speaking in slurred speech when he first met him in the early stages of rehearsal, longtime friend and fitness trainer Lou Ferrigno said he saw no signs of physical distress during workouts a couple weeks before the singer died.

The former "Hulk" star said that two weeks before Jackson's passing, he watched as the pop icon trained for an hour at his rented Beverly Hills mansion, doing cardio on a treadmill, working with light weights and doing core exercises. Ferrigno described Jackson's energy level as very good, but did note that his friend complained of having trouble sleeping.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors showed a previously unseen, graphic image of the 50-year-old Jackson's body on a hospital gurney and claimed in opening statements that they planned to show that Murray repeatedly acted with gross negligence and incompetence in administering a drug cocktail to Jackson.

Murray, who was working on a $150,000-a-month retainer, faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if found guilty.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff countered by telling the jury that Jackson caused his own death by swallowing eight 2-milligram pills of the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam, as well as injecting himself with a dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol that instantly killed him. Testimony in the trial continues Wednesday (September 28).

Dead Sea not so dead, divers discover

For the first time, researchers have sent a diving expedition into the Dead Sea, where they uncovered freshwater springs issuing from massive craters in the seafloor, along with a menagerie of microbes.

Both finds were a first for the world's saltiest body of water, which is also the lowest spot on the planet.

  1. More science news from MSNBC Tech & Science

    1. Can magnetic invisibility cloak hide weapons?

A team of Spanish researchers say they can build a magnetic cloaking device that would help pacemaker patients pass through MRI machines without harm ? but it could also be used by criminals to smuggle bombs or guns through metal detectors.

    2. Prehistoric beetles sported hot-rod colors
    3. Everything you know about pterosaurs is wrong
    4. Dead Sea not so dead, divers discover

The Dead Sea lies between Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian West Bank. Its salt-heavy waters allow humans to float effortlessly on the surface ? a phenomenon that makes the Dead Sea a popular resort destination, yet notoriously challenging for divers attempting to swim down into the water.

A research team from Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev managed to dive down into the salty waters to confirm their suspicions that freshwater springs jet up from deep fissures in the seafloor.

The freshwater gushes from steep-walled craters about 45 feet across and 60 feet deep. The researchers found that the water forms a complex of springs flowing along the seafloor that is hundreds of feet long and 90 feet deep in some places.

In addition, the divers found mats of microbes living near the holes in the seafloor. The variety of the microorganisms living in an environment thought to be largely devoid of life was surprising, the researchers said.

"While there are no fish present, carpets of microorganisms that cover large seafloor areas contain considerable richness of species," said Danny Ionescu of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Germany, an institute that collaborated with the Israeli researchers on the recent expedition.

The Dead Sea is rapidly disappearing. Its waters evaporate at a rate of roughly 3 feet (1 meter) per year, largely due to humans choking off its main source, the Jordan River, to use for drinking water, according to the researchers.

BGU professor Jonathan Laronne and research student Yaniv Munwes, working with divers, devised the first system to directly measure the seafloor springs and study the structure of their upward flow.

"By developing a measurement system for these springs, we will be able to determine more accurately how much water is actually entering the Dead Sea," Laronne said in a statement.

Jessica Simpson Is Pregnant!!

Folks this is it: Jessica Simpson is pregnant. I usually don?t fall victim to celebrity rumors, but this one I definitely believe to be true. I am pretty good at figuring out if a celeb rumor is true or not. I have been writing about celebs since 2007 and reading about them for longer than I can remember, so I have a pretty good idea of what is true and what is just silly rumor. Jessica Simpson is rumored to be pregnant and I think this time around the rumors are legit. Here is my evidence, aside from the fact that she has been walking around in VERY loose shirts, seems to have a small pouch, and her wedding was rumored to be postponed, of course. This blind item: ?This female star has certainly had her ups and downs. Her career has gone up and down and has expanded over more than one creative medium. She has dated at least three or four famous guys, has been married to and divorced from another celebrity, and is a tabloid staple. Depending on who you talk to and which day it is, she is either gorgeous or ugly. Well, we know one [...]

Sophia Yin: World Rabies Day: BAWA-Bali Works to Stop Rabies Epidemic in Bali

If you've ever seen video of humans infected with rabies you've most likely placed it at the top of your "avoid this" list. When a rabid animal bites, it injects virus into the wound. The virus lies hidden and insidiously travels from the periphery to the spinal cord and brain (the central nervous system or CNS). This process can take up to 6 months, depending on how far the virus must travel to reach the CNS. Once it reaches the central nervous system it causes inflammation leading to fever, pain, partial paralysis, difficulty swallowing, hallucinations, and paranoia. Within 10 days of showing signs, the infected human is dead. The disease is virtually 100% fatal.

September 28th World Rabies Day serves as a reminder of the dangers of the deadly rabies virus that kills roughly 55,000 people worldwide per year. To those in the U.S. this number may mean very little. Although 7000 cases of animal rabies--primarily in raccoons, skunks and bats--are reported yearly, only 1-3 human rabies cases occur yearly in the U.S. But if over 130 people in an area roughly the size of Connecticut had died of this infection and over 100,000 dogs had been killed in the name of rabies eradication, your view would be quiet different.

Janice Girardi, founder and director of Bali Animal Welfare Organization (www.BawaBali.org) has been living through this experience for the last three years and has taken on a huge role as rabies educator and eradicator; helping the Bali government to control the disease.

For the 30 years that Girardi has lived on this resort island that makes up one of the 17,000 islands of Indonesian archipelago, rabies was never a problem. Bali had been rabies free. But the Bali-street dogs population has always been high. Then, says Girardi, whose non-profit organization has focused on spay/neuter and vaccination programs since its creation 5 years ago, "In November 2008 we had our first rabies death on Bali. It was followed slowly at first by others."
The government's first response was in line with that of other developing countries with little funds for healthcare and a lack of vaccines--they sought to rid the island of its 350,000 dogs. First, they left meat laced with strychnine. When many dogs learned to avoid the meat, they switched to darting the dogs. Vaccination was not a priority for dogs or for humans who had been bitten yet because Indonesia had a law at that time that declared rabies vaccines and rabies vaccination to be illegal unless you have the disease. That means that even humans who were bitten could not receive the series of four preventive vaccinations. Furthermore the immunoglobulin that can be given to bite victims post-exposure was not licensed either.

"So when rabies hit there (in Bali) weren't even any effective vaccines available," Says Girardi. "It took almost a year to get a good long-acting vaccine like we have in the U.S."

Not surprisingly, when I visited in 2009 and volunteered at BAWA, which is how I met Girardi, it was clear that the attempt to eradicate rabies was not working. During my short stay, the newspaper reported several more individuals had died of rabies in previously rabies free-areas of the island.

2011-09-26-BaliIndonesia1405.jpg

Bali-street dogs, many of whom are fed and even
owned by villagers, are caught in nets and then vaccinated,
an identification collar placed, and then released as a
part of the rabies eradication program.

The lack of success was no surprise to epidemiologists who study rabies epidemics. According to Francois-Xavier Meslin, leader of the World Health Organization's Neglected Zoonotic Diseases team in Geneva, "The problem is that killing dogs, the favored method for dealing with rabies in much of the developing world, simply creates a "vacuum effect" whereby infected dogs move into the areas where culling has occurred."

A herd health-vaccination approach
Bali has a human population of nearly 4 million people who are fond of their estimated 350,000 dogs. It's not possible for the government to kill every single dog, especially since the island residents, most of whom are Hindu, love animals, as compared to the other Indonesian islands that are primarily Muslim, where stray dogs are viewed as vermin and destroyed. Additionally, most Bali dogs are intact leading to a huge puppy population, which replaces the dogs that have died. Due to this common dog population profile, epidemiologist and veterinarians trained in herd health recommend widespread vaccination of dogs in rabies epidemic areas as the only effective way to control rabies in places such as Bali.

But vaccinating 70% of 350,000 free-roaming dogs on an island where the average citizen has a little formal education and are so poor that they have trouble feeding their children. Luckily some assistance was on the way. With the guidance of epidemiologists from the University of Glasgow, Girardi formulated a way to help both the citizens and the dogs of Bali.

Says Girardi, "Epidemiologists from the University of Glasgow along with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) came and assessed the situation. They mapped out how the virus would spread if it was not controlled and then based on this epidemiologic mapping, they recommended we find a way to vaccinate 70% of the population of dogs within 6 months."

Why 70%? It has to do with the herd-health approach. " If 70% of dogs are vaccinated and a rabid dog comes in, it can still bite a human and cause death and bite unvaccinated dogs and cause death," states Girardi, "but it will not cause an epidemic because enough dogs are vaccinated so the disease will die out."

For example, if a rabid dog bites 3 other dogs and 2 of these dogs are vaccinated, only one will get disease and according to epidemiologists, the epidemic will die out.

On the other hand if few dogs are vaccinated in a non-rabies population and a dog with rabies bites three dogs, all three dogs may get rabies and each may potentially bite another three, and so on, leading to a rapid increase in the rabies population.

The number of dogs to vaccinate was important but the 6-month time frame was crucial too.
"The turnover rate of dogs in Bali is fast," says Girardi. "Many dogs die because they are hit by cars or they get parvovirus or distemper or other diseases and many puppies are born. So the longer we took, the more likely out vaccinated dogs would be dying out of the population."

Could a vaccination program be carried out?
Seventy percent of 350,000 dogs is a huge number and a big expense for the government, so there was skepticism regarding whether such a program could be carried out effectively. Girardi believed it could be done so she spearheaded a pilot program to prove that large-scale capture of and vaccination of free-roaming dogs. In December of 2009, with $5000 donated by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and 45,000 vaccines from the World Society Protection Association (WSPA) along with her personal savings, Girardi and her organization started capturing and vaccinating dogs in Gianyar, one of the nine Bali Provinces. The 36 teams of 6 members each reached their goal of vaccinating more than 70% of the Gianyar dogs within 6 months.

Next, they moved to Bangli region with funding from WSPA from June through August 2010 and after that, they got the go-ahead to take the program nationwide. The epidemiologists recommend that the vaccinations occur in three island-wide phases and WSPA and IFAW agreed to fund phase I. From October 1 2010 to March 31, 2011 over 250,000 of the 300,000 dogs --their final dog count-- in Bali were vaccinated.

This was no small feat because it involved more than meets the eye. "For the first two pilot programs of Gaiyar and Bangli we spoke to all of the village leaders to get them to agree in writing that if we vaccinated the dogs, neither they nor the government would cull the dogs," states Girardi. For phase I of the island-wide program we had a signature from the Governor and all of the Mayors, which took 6 months.

"Killing of vaccinated dogs would undermine our program because it would reduce the population herd health. We ran phase I with 52 teams and 6-7 people per team. Each member was prevaccinated against rabies and went through a 3 week training period where they were taught how to catch dogs with nets on the street, vaccinate them without getting bitten, then place a collar or spray paint so they could tell who had been vaccinated. Then they would survey the dog population in an area to ensure that 70% were vaccinated prior to moving on to another village.

The program was intense and expensive and funded primarily by Girardi herself. She put up about $100,000 of her own savings from her primary business--Girardi is a popular designer of jewelry, which is sold worldwide in catalogues such as Sundance and Red Envelope. But her efforts and money paid off. They had trained 430 staff island-wide that could be used for phases II and III of the program and they could see a difference.

Says Girardi, "If you compare a 4-5 month period this year versus in 2010, you see a drastic reduction in confirmed dog rabies cases and human rabies cases. We went from 250 positive villages to 48. We also had a 75 and 85% reduction in human and dog cases of rabies."

On top of this the villagers are more aware that they should be concerned if bitten so more villagers are actually reporting when they are bitten by any dog and getting the post exposure treatment (PEP) as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), a series of 4-5 rabies vaccinations to prevent potential disease.

Now, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is working with the government on phase II and III of the rabies program to keep the population vaccination numbers at 70%. The government is using the workers that BAWA-Bali trained to repeat the vaccination process again.

"Realistically it needs to be continued even after phase III, because in a country like Bali, in four years, many of the vaccinated dogs will have died, plus dogs with rabies may still enter the country."

In spite of the cost, vaccinating dogs is cheaper than vaccinating humans who are bitten. It costs about $3.00 to vaccinate a dog, but if someone is bitten by a dog who may or may not have rabies the series of vaccines costs over $50.00. Treatment with protective immunoglobulin costs even more and is often prohibitively expense if it is even available.

For example, says Girardi, "When one local 5-year old girl whose parents could not afford treatment was bitten by a rabies infected dog, it cost $500 for me to help get her treated. When our BAWA-Bali night guard was bitten, I paid $1400.00 for immunoglobulin treatment for him."

Education is the key
While the government has taken to the vaccination, there's still much for Bawa- Bali to do. Says Girardi, "Education is the key." In her experience, more people are being bitten by dogs than ever before, because the villagers are now afraid of the dogs and acting out of their fear.

"I've never been bitten by a Bali street dog but the villagers sometimes are because they are now panicked about being bitten instead of just being mindful of their interactions. They use sticks to keep the dogs away from them or kick them to get them away and this causes the dogs to become defensively aggressive."

Indeed during my time in Bali, the street dogs were probably safer than the macaque monkeys. When you ignore them the dogs ignore you. If you approach they try to avoid you. This is in contrast to the Macaque monkeys in areas where they are fed by tourists. These monkeys may jump on people to steal food and even bite. Macaques harbor Herpes B, which generally leads to fatal encephalopathy (brain swelling) in humans.

2011-09-26-BaliIndonesia467.jpg

Tourists often feed the macaques which eventually leads to
macaques who steal food from humans and sometimes bite.
Macaques harbor herpes B which usually results in fatal
inflammation of the brain (encephalomyelitis).

Girardi states, "If a dog is rabid you can see the symptoms and know it. The Balinese need to know which dogs to fear and to understand dog behavior and how to avoid being bitten.

Another recent problem is that to reduce the roaming population and overall number of dogs, the government has required that all pet dogs be chained or caged on their owner's property. In the U.S., on the other hand, some cities have banned chaining of dogs for prolonged periods of time.

Of course the problem with chaining and caging is that these dogs do not receive proper socialization and are then are more likely to become fearful and defensively aggressive with dogs and people as well as territorially aggressive to people who enter the property. This is something the villagers may not understand yet. But one alarming trend that BAWA-Bali does see is that they are getting many dogs who are left in cages without food or water when owners travel or who have chain collars that are embedded in their neck. The Bali villagers need to be taught how to care for their dogs--that dogs require food, water, medicine, shelter and exercise and are social animals. They can't leave them in a cage for days or in some cases weeks at a time without care.

The solution to roaming dogs and overpopulation
Overall, the real solution to cutting the population of street dogs down is for villagers to have their dogs spayed or neutered and to feed and care for the ones they keep. This way dogs will tend to stay on their own property instead of needing to wander the streets for food.

"My dogs choose to stay on my property and only go off when I come home and walk to the river," states Girardi. "They could go to the river any time on their own but they choose to stay home and are so excited to accompany me on my walk. They are desexed and have good food and other dogs to play with at home, so they have no urge to go elsewhere on their own.

BAWA-Bali sterilizes on average 20 dogs a day and houses up to 125 cats and dogs in on any given day in their clinic. " We adopted out 90 dogs in June," says Girardi. "This includes making a home visit and training the villagers how to feed and care for their pet and then following up after the pet has been adopted."

clinic run by Bawabali (www.bawabali.org)

If you're looking to combine your vacation with a worthwhile cause, consider volunteering at BAWA-Bali for a several days or more. The average cost to stay in Bali is about $30 per day making for an affordable trip. Volunteers can work in the office or helping to educate the public. Those working in the clinic must be vaccinated for rabies before they arrive. Donations are very much needed and can also be made to Bawa-Bali at www.bawabali.org. BAWA-Bali is a nonprofit organization with 501(c)3 status in the U.S.

PFT: Vick has hand contusion, not fracture, Reid says

New England Patriots v Miami DolphinsGetty Images

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw four interceptions in a loss to the Bills on Sunday, but he?s also continuing an incredible assault on the NFL?s passing records.

With 387 yards on Sunday, Brady now has 1,327 yards for the season. That?s not just the best yardage total in the league this year by a wide margin, it?s the best that any player has ever had over any three weeks in NFL history. The previous record for most yards over a three-week stretch was 1,257, set by Drew Brees in 2006.

If Brady stays healthy, he has an excellent chance of breaking Dan Marino?s NFL record of 5,084 passing yards, set in 1984. Brady is on pace for an incredible 7,077 yards this season, and although it?s not realistic to think he?s going to keep this pace up, it?s absolutely realistic to think he could average 290 yards a game the rest of the way, which would be enough to break Marino?s record.

Brady is also on pace to throw 59 touchdown passes, which would blow away Brady?s own NFL record of 50.

Of course, Brady is also on pace for 27 interceptions this season, which would be by far the most in his career ? he?s never had more than 14 picks in a season. So Brady hasn?t been perfect, and neither have the Patriots. But that might only improve Brady?s chances of breaking the yardage and touchdown records. Brady is averaging about 45 passes a game, and the Patriots look like they?re going to be in a lot of games where they need Brady to throw 45 times.

Island nation to get its energy purely from coconuts and sunlight (Yahoo! News)

New Zealand island Tokelau plans to transition completely to renewable energy by 2012

The island nation Tokelau of New Zealand might not have its own?Star Wars coins like fellow island Niue, but it's also getting a dose of global attention, although for an entirely different reason. The island's leader, Foua Toloa, just announced a new energy policy that will power the island completely with sunlight and coconuts. And like many island nations, Tokelau has an abundance of both.

Right now,?solar energy already powers a few houses and buildings on the three?atolls of Tokelau. But most of the island nation still relies on fossil fuel, with each atoll needing up to 200 liters a day. Tokelau plans to transition to pure renewable energy by mid-2012. That entails installing approximately 200 square meters of solar cells on each atoll in order to meet its goal of relying on sunlight for 93% of its energy needs.

Tokelau plans to get the remaining 7% of its energy needs from coconut biofuel, which is reserved for use during overcast days. According to a feasibility study, 200 coconuts are needed to make the 20 to 30 liters of fuel each atoll requires ? that number shouldn't be a problem considering the island nation is rich on coconut trees. Gasoline and kerosene will still be allowed but only for minimal cooking and transportation needs.

Tokelau is a low-lying island nation under threat by increasing sea levels believed to be caused by climate change. The transition to?renewable energy is brought about by the government' desire to set an example when it comes to energy use.

"What would you name a new worm?" asks UK museum

LONDON | Thu Sep 22, 2011 12:37pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - What name would you give to a species of Antarctic, sea-dwelling worm that spends its time 2,000 meters below the water's surface, wriggling in the rotting carcasses of whales?

The British public will get to name five newly discovered species of this deep-sea worm, the Natural History Museum in London said on Friday, as it opens its doors to explain that taxonomy -- the practice of naming new species -- is not taxing, but fun.

"Our goal is to show that taxonomy, the scientific discipline of naming new species, is interesting, fun and crucial to the advancement of science," zoologist at the National History Museum, Adrian Glover, said.

The unnamed worms are known as annelids, a group that also includes the familiar garden earthworm, as well as more unusual critters such as the giant hydrothermal vent tubeworm.

Deep sea annelids are an incredibly diverse group and scientists believe they perform vital recycling of nutrients on the seabed.

"These five species of worm are ecosystem engineers that hoover up the ocean floor, which is very important for the ecosystem. We know virtually nothing about these worms -- they don't even have a name yet," Glover told Reuters.

The scientific names given to animals must be comprised of two parts -- the genus and the species -- and must have a Greek or Latin origin.

The genus for these five worms is Ophryotrocha, and scientists will ask visitors to the museum's event, "Science Uncovered," to examine the specimens and come up with a name for each species.

Taxonomists often consider the shape, pattern, or location of origin of a creature when deciding on a suitable name.

The worms waiting for names were discovered in a variety of marine habitats, including volcanic vents on the seafloor and even rotting carcasses of dead whales -- sources of nutrients in a vast underwater environment where food is scarce.

"The names don't have to be serious, but they have to be the unique. Although the genus is fixed, you can be a bit more imaginative with the species," Glover said.

"For example, we discovered a group of worms in the Pacific Ocean that, when grouped together, looked like the Greek, shaggy pile carpets you can buy in IKEA, so we named it "flokati,"" he said.

Some scientists have even looked to showbusiness for inspiration in naming new species.

Calponia harrisonfordi is a type of spider named after Harrison Ford, to thank the Hollywood actor for narrating a documentary for London's National History Museum.

Musician Frank Zappa also has a spider named after him, Pachygnatha zappa, because its unique markings resemble his famous mustache.

However, the importance of classifying the worms is not to be laughed at -- taxonomy plays a fundamental role in scientific research.

"Taxonomy gives names to new species linked to actual specimens held in museums, which means we can continue to develop the database of biodiversity on Earth," Glover said.

"It provides a link between species, so biologists can communicate and know they are working on the same animals," he said.

"There are strict rules to taxonomy, and we want to explain how it happens and how we link it to specimens in museums. What is crucial is that the name is unique and backed up by data, such as DNA sequences, fundamental descriptions and specimens," he said.

The London National History Museum collection alone contains roughly 70 million specimens, many of which are smaller animals such as worms, Glover said.

With scientists yet to discover about 90 percent of the estimated 9 million plant and animal species on earth, according to a recent study, this collection of jarred curiosities can only increase with future exploration of the deep seas.

"We don't even know what's down there, let alone what role it plays in the ecosystem," Glover said.

"Exploration of the deep sea is akin to what rainforests were to scientists about 200 years ago, where they discovered lots of new species every day," he said.

"And the first step to take when you find new species is naming them."

The free event, "Science Uncovered," takes place on Friday, Sept 23 from 4-11pm.

Suggestions for naming the worms can also be sent via twitter to @NHM_London, using the hashtags #nameaworm and #SU2011.

Hawaii Department of Education Selects Blackboard Learn 9.1 to ...

The Hawaii Department of Education?s Extended Learning Opportunities and Student Support section has chosen?Blackboard Learn? 9.1 to replace an open source learning management system (LMS) Blackboard Inc. (Nasdaq: BBBB) announced today. The platform provides online courses for over 1,200 students through the Hawaii Virtual Learning Network-ESchool (HVLN-ESchool) and over 500 teachers annually through the HVLN-Project Inspire program.

Prior to moving to Release 9.1, HVLN utilized an open source platform to deliver online content. But the need for additional features, easy customizations, and greater functionality prompted them to explore options for a more robust LMS platform. HLVN also anticipated an increase in student and teacher enrollments, suggesting the need for an enterprise capable implementation.

HLVN formed a selection committee to evaluate several LMS options to find the best fit to support student and teacher needs. The committee found that the Release 9.1 platform offered both?cost efficiency and enhanced usability in a fully hosted solution including a streamlined approach to course delivery, content management and technical support.

?The evaluation conducted by HVLN was a complete assessment of teaching and learning needs, cost comparisons and product performance,? said Brett Frazier, Senior Vice President at Blackboard. ?It?s exciting to see a learning platform approach that is well aligned with the strategic goals of a statewide program and helps students, teacher and faculty members engage with one another to promote student success.?

HVLN has already leveraged Release 9.1 to deliver online professional development options to over 500 teachers during the last year. This online professional learning community is now enhanced through the consortium provision of faculty courses, such as online teaching training.

Starting this fall, HVLN began delivering secondary courses to over 1,000 students. Schools are utilizing the branding features to customize the system?s interface to create an accessible portal for all online learning resources. In addition, parents can directly access their child?s course progress in real time rather than waiting for the online instructor to provide a progress report.

HVLN?s limited IT staff leverages Blackboard?s support and hosting team for day-to-day management of the system, including software downloads, reference materials and management assistance, enabling them to dedicate more time and resources to other teaching and learning initiatives.

More than 1,600 higher education, K-12 and professional institutions have adopted Blackboard?s next generation platform to take advantage of its improved stability and digital content advancements, social learning tools to drive student engagement and greater workflow efficiencies for instructors and administrators.

Somewhere outside New Orleans, the sun was rising over the gnarled trees the group camped out next to. It was swamp-land, so dry ground was difficult to find, one that would stay dry, of course. It was early in the morning, and because they were far from the road, there was no wake-up call of cars whooshing by, the early morning traffic. Mona slept curled into a ball closes to the thick tree, the least sunlight reaching her. The group had attached a wire to the trunk and pulled it tight and tied it to a branch situated parallel to the thick trunk, over that, they had draped sheets over their sleeping area, making a triangle tent that would fit all of them within that space.

It has been a while since some of them felt the comfort of a pillow under their heads, but their lifestyle didn't demand such luxuries, they've gotten used to the hard floor as their bed, and considered the morning music, such as birds chirping and the sun waking them, a luxury all on it's own.

Bitsky was the first to rise, stretching and letting out a well drawn-out yawn, he didn't sit up however, instead, grimaced and tugged the corner of the sheet up over his head, folding his arms across his chest to keep it in place. Being the one on the outside of the make-shift bed, the sun was heading his face almost uncomfortably. It wasn't warm outside, since it was early spring, the temperature in New Orleans only reached up to 70 on most days. His gesture, though, looked as if he was going to back to sleep, what with the sheet over his head now blocking the sunlight.

Mona, all the way in the shade, and against the cool tree-trunk, slept soundly, even if all the rest were to wake up, she'd continue her feline sleep almost throughout the late morning. The only way to wake her up was the physical use of force to sit her up and shake her a couple of times, otherwise, she wouldn't budge.

Today, though, the group planned an early wake-up, so they could get an entire day in of adventure in the city. New Orleans being a real accomodating place for folk like them.

Epigenetic changes often don?t last, probably have limited effects on long-term evolution, research finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2011) ? The first comprehensive inventory of epigenetic changes over several generations shows that these often do not last and therefore probably have limited effects on long-term evolution, according to scientists in Germany.

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck would have been delighted: geneticists no longer dismiss out of hand his belief that acquired traits can be passed on to offspring. When Darwin published his book on evolution, Lamarck's theory of transformation went onto the ash heap of history. But in the last decade, we have learned that the environment can after all leave traces in the genomes of animals and plants, in form of so-called epigenetic modifications. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Developmental Biology in Germany have now produced the first comprehensive inventory of spontaneous epigenetic changes.

Using Arabidopsis, the workhorse of modern plant genetics, the researchers determined how often and where in the genome epigenetic modifications occur -- and how often they disappear again. They found that epigenetic changes are many orders of magnitude more frequent than conventional DNA mutations, but also often short lived. They are therefore probably much less important for long-term evolution than previously thought.

A team led by Detlef Weigel, director of the Department for Molecular Biology, focused on one of the most important epigenetic marks, methylation of DNA. Tiny chemical building blocks, methyl groups, are thereby attached to individual letters of the DNA, mostly to cytosines. The genetic information itself in form of the four different letters or nucleotides that make up the genetic code remains unchanged in this process.

To determine the rate and distribution of methylation changes in the genome, the German biologists looked at ten Arabidopsis lines. These lines came from the same stock, but had been propagated independently for 30 generations by self-fertilization. In the genome of the last generation the scientists then searched for differences in the methylation pattern in comparison to the common ancestor. They produced for each individual a complete map of methylated cytosines in the genome, the so-called methylome.

"For each line, we were able to look at about 14 million cytosines," said Claude Becker, a member of the T?bingen team. On average, every plant had almost 3 million methylated cytosines. The vast majority of these were the same in all lines, but about 6 percent had changed since the lines had become separated. At these positions, at least one of the individuals was different, with either methylation gained or lost relative to the ancestor. Each of the lines had about 30,000 such epimutations, which was 1,000 times more than DNA mutations.

With 30,000 epimutations after 30 generations, the geneticists had expected that 1,000 epimutations occurred in each generation. When they directly compared parents and their immediate offspring, they were surprised to find that the epimutation rate was three to four times as high. The scientists concluded that many epimutations are apparently not stable and return to their original state after a few generations.

Thus, averaging the mutation rate over many generations is misleading. Becker's colleague J?rg Hagmann therefore cautions not to overestimate the importance of DNA methylation during evolution: "Our experiments show that methylation changes are often reversible." In other words: New epimutations are often not maintained over the long term. "Only when selection wins out over reversion can these epimutations affect evolution," says Hagmann. A new epimutation thus must have a strong evolutionary advantage so that it can become established before being lost again. Because reverse mutations do not necessarily happen in the next generation, it is still possible that epigenetic differences contribute to inheritance of traits between parents and their children or grandparents and their grandchildren.

Another difference to ordinary mutations is that epimutations do not occur randomly, but often at the same places in the genome. While genes were disproportionately often affected, methylation of mobile DNA elements, transposons, was very stable. This appears to make sense, since it was already known that artificially induced loss of methylation has a much greater effect on the activity of transposons than of regular genes.

More important than the state of individual cytosines is probably the methylation of larger segments of the genome. "In each plant we found only about 30 such regions in which they differed from the other lines," explains Becker. Hagmann adds: "Such whole-sale epigenetic changes appear to be as rare as true DNA sequence mutations." These differences can nevertheless appear very rapidly. The biologists discovered one region that first lost its methyl groups, only to become completely remethylated in the next generation.

What makes epigenetics interesting for human health is the fact that some epigenetic changes can be triggered by external factors. There is evidence that nutrition or the bond between children and their parents can leave traces in the genome that can be passed on to the next generation. The limited stability of DNA methylation implies, however, that such differences do not necessarily last forever, which is probably not a bad idea because a famine might not last forever. It also means that altered DNA methylation often cannot become subject to natural selection.

The results of the Max Planck scientists demonstrate that epigenetic differences can also arise spontaneously, without drastic changes in the environment. After all, the growth conditions in the green house, where each of the 10 lines was propagated, were constant. This opens the door to further speculation. "We suspect that the epimutation increase is higher and more variable when plants grow in nature, where they are stressed all the time," says Becker. If this were paralleled by an even higher reversion rate, then the importance of epigenetics for long-term evolution would be even lower.

The Role of Shared Living Providers in Supporting Healthy Sexuality ...

Shared living is one of the residential service models available to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) who receive services from the Department of Developmental Services. Shared living services provide support to the individual in a natural, family environment.

An important focus of shared living is to foster relationships and promote community inclusion. Sexual expression can be a part of some relationships.

A provider?s role

Shared Living Providers (SLP) can support the person living in their home to develop a positive sexual identity. By providing a supportive, non-judgmental environment, the SLP has the opportunity to assist the individual with building a healthy self concept, positive self esteem and confidence to discover who they are as an individual.
Another area that a SLP can influence is the person?s experience of intimacy and building healthy relationships. It is very important for a SLP to work with the individual to build a home environment that is safe and comfortable. It takes time and acceptance of the individual for who they are to build a trusting relationship and create an intimate environment where the person feels at home.

Some things to remember

? A person with I/DD is a sexual being and has the same need for relationships as everyone else.

? It takes time for a person to adjust to a new living situation and being around new people. Trust has to be built between everyone. Making consistent time for 1:1 attention is a great way to make a person feel accepted.

? SLPs have to know their own limits; sexuality is complicated. The topics being raised may challenge your comfort level or may be topics you don?t know well enough to confidently discuss. As a SLP, if you need help, ask your case manager at the agency.
? Take the person?s questions seriously. They are struggling to understand their feelings and learning how to express them.

Together we can make a difference in how a person with I/DD understands their sexuality. In turn, they can learn how to enjoy their relationships in safe, healthy and fun ways.
