US consumer sentiment at lowest level for year

(AP) ? A measure of U.S. consumer sentiment fell in June to the lowest level for 2012, dragged down by a sluggish job market and weak growth.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment fell to 73.2 in June from 79.3 in May. Higher-income households said they planned to cut back on spending, accounting for much of the drop.

The report echoes the Conference Board's survey of consumer confidence, which fell in June for the fourth straight month. Concerns about the job market are outweighing the benefits of lower gas prices.

Investors, however, brushed off the report. Stocks are soaring in early trading after European leaders agreed on steps to address that region's financial crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped more than 200 points.

Apple SVP of Hardware Engineering, Bob Mansfield, to retire. Dan Riccio to take his place.

The man responsible for producing all the hardware that powers all of Apple's designs and software, Senior Vice President Bob Mansfield, is retiring. There's not much more to the story at this point, but he's obviously got Apple money, and like Jon Rubinstein, Tony Fadell, and Bertrand Serlet before him, he's done what he set out to accomplish, and is ready for the next chapter.

Beckham fails to make Britain's Olympic team

LONDON (AP) ? Bending free kicks. Hollywood looks. National hero.

David Beckham ? Britain's most famous sportsman ? seemed destined to be a headliner at the London Olympics.

Not on the soccer field.

The former England captain failed to make the British Olympic team, a surprise snub for a local lad who helped secure the games for his city and worked tirelessly to promote them.

"Naturally, I am very disappointed," Beckham said Thursday after being notified that he hadn't been selected for the final 18-man squad. "But there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me."

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder had made Britain's 35-man preliminary shortlist and seemed certain to win one of the three places allowed for players over the age of 23. Instead, he was informed by coach Stuart Pearce that he hadn't made the final squad.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," the 37-year-old Beckham said in a statement Thursday.

Beckham's ties to the Olympics go back to 2005 when he joined the bid team run by Sebastian Coe for the competition against Paris, Madrid, New York and Moscow. He was with the team in Singapore when London beat Paris in the final round of voting, adding credibility not just as a celebrity but as an east London native.

Since then, Beckham has taken part in countless Olympic activities. He even accompanied the Olympic flame on a flight from Greece to England last month and lit a cauldron signaling the start of the British torch relay.

"David has been an extraordinary supporter, probably our No. 1 supporter, of the games from the very beginning and is keen to continue his enthusiastic support right to the end," Coe said.

He indicated there could still be a role for Beckham, though not in a sporting capacity.

"He really gets this," Coe said. "He is from east London and knows how important the games and sport are to young people. He is a great role model and we are lucky to have such an advocate. I will be talking to him about a games-time role."

British bookmaker Ladbrokes slashed the odds on Beckham being given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the July 27 opening ceremony, making him 5-1. Five-time rowing gold medalist Steve Redgrave is the 1-2 favorite. The Olympic Stadium is located near Leytonstone, where Beckham was born.

For his part, Beckham has so far only said he hopes to attend the Olympics and support Britain's athletes.

"As a Londoner, I will have been really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town as part of Seb's team, and I can't wait for the games to begin and enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain," Beckham said.

Beckham's absence from the team will come as a big disappointment to his fans around the world.

Laura Robson, who lost a first-round doubles match at Wimbledon on Thursday with fellow British partner Heather Watson, said: "Obviously, I'm disappointed that he's not going to be joining myself and Heather in the Olympic Village."

Then she jokingly added: "Won't be able to stalk him."

The decision by Pearce to omit Beckham almost certainly spells the end of his career representing his country. He has made 115 England appearances, with the last coming in 2009.

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who made a record 125 appearances for the national team, backed Pearce's decision to omit Beckham.

"He's been a fantastic player over the years, certainly when he was at his peak, but he's nowhere the player he was," Shilton said on British television. "It would have been great from a publicity point of view, but Stuart Pearce obviously feels he'd struggle in that type of tournament."

The Olympics would have provided Beckham with a last chance to win an international trophy, the only triumph to elude a player who has won domestic league titles in England and Spain, the Champions League and the MLS Cup.

Despite Beckham's best efforts, including a prolonged spell as captain, England remains without a trophy since winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil.

Being dropped from the team means Beckham won't get a chance to reunite with former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs on the international stage when Britain fields its first Olympic soccer team since 1960.

Giggs, fellow Welshman Craig Bellamy and English defender Micah Richards will be the overage players in the squad, a person familiar with the situation said. He spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of the squad haven't been publicly released.

It appears that Beckham lost his place to the 24-year-old Richards, who plays for Manchester City and will provide extra defensive cover after missing out on England's European Championship squad.

The 32-year-old Bellamy is a forward at Liverpool who, like Giggs and Richards, has never appeared at a major international soccer tournament.

The British Olympic Association said it had not yet been informed by the English Football Association, which is running the team, that Beckham had been overlooked by Pearce. The coach had traveled to the United States to assess Beckham's form and fitness in Major League Soccer.

"We are expecting the list no later than the early part of next week," the BOA said in a statement.

Britain plays its opening match on July 26 against Senegal at Old Trafford, where Beckham spent his 10-year career with United before joining Real Madrid in 2003. He moved to the Galaxy four years later.

Britain then faces the United Arab Emirates three days later at Wembley and Uruguay on Aug. 1 at the Millennium Stadium.

Britain has not fielded an Olympic soccer team since 1960 because Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland feared losing their independence within FIFA. The world body has assured the federations that their status won't be affected by participating in the 16-team competition at the London Games.

The Ugly Truth About Exercise Equipment ? News and Reviews

You have probably all seen the various fitness equipment commercials. The claims made in these commercials tend to stretch credibility to the limit. You are invited to ?Get the perfect abs in 10 minutes a day? or even ? Have a sculpted body in no time.? Each machine claims to use cutting edge technology with the express purpose to get you in shape and lose pounds with a minimal effort. Oh boy! If it was only that simple. We all desire to look great and feel healthy but you have to put some work in. This usually takes the form of a vigorous exercise schedule combined with a properly balanced diet. In order to lose weight and achieve a well toned body you will have to burn calories on a regularly basis. You don?t have to be a genius to figure that out. There is a plethora of fitness equipment on the market and most are just fads which are fashionable for a few months then disappear never to see the light of day again. There is, however, one that is still a major player, and that is the treadmill.

Torso Track, Total Gym 1000/2000, Ab Sculptor, Ab Rockers, Ab Doers, Slam Man, Thighmasters, Toning System, Door Gym, Orbitrek are the latest thing one day and then forgotten the next. You may ask yourself why you never see treadmills sold on infomercials? The reason is simple. It is because it is not a high profit, hyped up, exercise gadget, which is more the product of clever marketing than a serious piece of exercise equipment. Most infomercial equipment is designed for just one purpose, to make as much money as soon as possible before people discover that they don?t work. Most of the price of this equipment is used in order to market it. So who would possibly want to buy this stuff? Usually it is people who mistakenly believe that there are shortcuts to weight loss and getting in shape. Achieving your fitness goals requires that you put in some work and the results will not happen over night.

No machine is going to produce the results you desire without commitment from yourself. Have you ever seen any infomercial equipment at a health club? No, because they don?t work and they?re not built to last. What you will see, however, are a number of treadmills, often with people waiting their turn to use them. It really boils down to this. Getting fit is really the prodcut of two things ? time and effort. The more time and effort you put into exercising the more calories you are going to burn and the more weight you will lose. If you are looking for fitness equipment that will maximize your efforts, then a Treadmill is the obvious choice.

Supreme Court hands Obama 'victory' on health

President Barack Obama claimed a "victory" for all Americans after the Supreme Court upheld his reforms to extend health insurance to another 32 million US citizens.

Obama said the ruling, which prescribes how health care will be delivered in the United States for decades to come, went beyond politics as he urged a divided America to get behind a law that was in the interests of all.

"Whatever the politics, today's decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives are more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court's decision to uphold it," Obama said.

"I'm as confident as ever that when we look back five years from now or 10 years from now, or 20 years from now, we will be better off because we had the courage to pass this law, and keep moving forward."

But Republicans, choking at the very thought of endorsing Obama's signature domestic achievement just five months out from a tightly-contested presidential election, vowed to tear down the law.

"'Obamacare' was bad policy yesterday. It's bad policy today," said Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, vowing to repeal on day one a law he has painted as government overreach, costly and wrong-headed.

But Obama said an America struggling to emerge from a painful recession, with a ballooning budget deficit and stubbornly high unemployment, could ill afford to refight old political battles.

"The highest court in the land has now spoken," he said. "With today's announcement, it is time for us to move forward to implement and where necessary improve on this law."

The key provision that underpinned the overhaul, an "individual mandate" requiring almost every US citizen from 2014 to take out health insurance or be subject to a fine, was upheld by a nail-biting 5-4 vote.

John Roberts, the conservative-leaning chief justice often viewed as a bete noire by Democrats, was the unlikely hero for liberals as the key swing vote.

Writing the majority opinion in a landmark ruling that could alter the perception of the Supreme Court, Roberts said the law was constitutional as the punishment for not paying the mandate could be seen as a tax.

"The federal government does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance," Roberts wrote. "The federal government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance."

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote a stinging dissent on behalf of the four other conservative-leaning justices. "In our view, the entire Act before us is invalid in its entirety," it said.

Despite the worst fears of the Obama administration, the only restriction to the sweeping reforms was on the provision to expand coverage to 16 million more poor Americans through the federal Medicaid program.

The court upheld the clause but ordered the government to withdraw its threat to withhold federal funding from states that do not comply.

The ruling offers new ammunition to Republicans trying to fire up the conservative base and get out the vote in November, but it was also a huge win for Obama that boosts his claim to be a transformative president.

"It is as big an act as killing Osama bin Laden in terms of giving his presidency a temporary boost," Stephen Ryan, former general counsel of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, told AFP.

Two years after Obama signed into law the act to insure most of the 50 million uninsured Americans and prevent coverage from being refused on the basis of patients' medical histories, its fate lay in the hands of just six men and three women.

There were cheers outside the court and across the country from liberals and Democrats, for whom this issue has been a burning crusade for decades.

"We are jumping for joy," said Julie Walters, a 35-year-old recruiter in Novato, California whose three-year-old Violet has a rare genetic condition that causes severe epilepsy.

"It means we can live our life not in fear," Walters, whose daughter could have lost coverage due to her pre-existing condition if the law had been struck down, told AFP.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, an integral part of her husband Bill's unsuccessful effort as president to pass health care reform in the 1990s, told journalists in Saint Petersburg she was "excited" at the news.

But "Obamacare" opponents were incensed.

"The entire law must be repealed," said Matt Smith of Catholic Advocate, a group outraged by the law's requirement for organizations to include contraception in their employee health plans.

In another sign of the bitter political climate, Obama's top justice official, Attorney General Eric Holder, was held in contempt Thursday by the House of Representatives for withholding documents related to a botched gun-running operation.

The White House dismissed the move -- the first time in history such a censure had happened -- as a "transparently political stunt."

Although the United States is the world's richest nation, it is the only industrialized democracy that does not provide health care coverage to all its citizens.

Dealing with Distractions from Little Ones | Live life with your Kids!

Q. Do you have any seasoned advice for minimising distractions from younger siblings? Q. How do you teach with toddlers or babies that are demanding time?? What works? Q. How can you keep an older child on ?task? when you are doing the ?interesting? stuff with a younger one?

A. ?Routine always helps when there are multiple ages in the home.? I used to plan my older children?s activities around the needs of the baby.? We would do interactive, busy, out of the house type activities during baby?s wake time, and focus or quiet activities during baby?s sleep time.

As the baby grew into toddler and preschool ages things did get interesting!? Our family life though isn?t about homeschooling but rather about discipling every person ? which includes the toddler.? There comes a time when training the toddler to be quiet, focused and occupied needs to be our parenting focus.? Once these habits are established then they join the family learning times.? I used cot time, mat time, highchair time as specific training opportunities throughout the day, to help my toddlers gain self-control and focus. (A great resource is Terrific Toddlers).

During these training times I would have my older child/ren doing independent activities.? This could be hands on like puzzles, games or art, or it could be their studies like typing, handwriting, math, and finishing notebook pages ? and of course reading.? Reading was always the activity I directed my kids to if I was caught up with the younger ones and they didn?t know what to do.

Our focus time (or homeschool time) has started at different time over the years but it has always started off with family time.? What we have done at this time has changed over the years but we would read the Bible, pray, read other stories, do something altogether.? The little ones would just be there with us.? They would learn to sit still and not talk.? This is good training for other times in our life as well (like church, or visiting with friends).??? Sometimes I?d let them play quietly with lego, dolls, playdough, reading books.? The idea was that they were there and they were quiet.

Once we moved into the 3 R?s type of learning I found it helpful to start with the youngest ? give them some focused one on one time and then they would play more contentedly while I helped the older ones with their lessons.? This part of our day went something like this:

  • Preschooler ? 10 minutes (reading their books, doing an art activity together, puzzles, games etc)
  • School age ? 10-15 minutes while preschooler by themselves.? If I could teach one lesson to more than one child, this was helpful.? For example Josh and Jess learnt writing together, though they were at different levels with their math.
  • Preschool ? 10 min ? while school age finished their things independently
  • And I kept rotating like this.? It was full on.

Then you have the baby or the toddler that is sick or out of sorts and all your training goes out the window!? My backup plan for these days was to know what my older ones could do by themselves:

  • They could do their independent studies:? math, typing, handwriting, writing, notebook pages, reading, music etc (different for different children and different at different ages)
  • They could play board games (if baby was number 3 or more, that is!!)
  • They could play imagination games together ? or go outside
  • They could play by themselves ? room time, independent play
  • I could read stories while cuddling the upset baby/toddler

I would have them rotate through these types of activities and I could give my attention to the demanding toddler/pre-schooler.? Of course we can only do this for a season ? the key is to train the toddler not to be demanding but to be a part of the family.

There is also an opportunity to teach the older ones to handle distractions and to become responsible themselves for how they spend their time.? I know very few adult life situations where you don?t have distractions ? the phone, little children, appointments, facebook, ? all sorts of things distract us and I have used this idea to teach my older children that they need to be able to focus when other people are doing different things around them.

Though I give the children the freedom to go and study anywhere in the house we have maintained one large table for everyone as their study desk (during homeschooling years).? This has meant that one student will be doing their Bible study while I give a math lesson to a younger student.? It has meant that while the younger ones finish their notebook page I get into a deep conversation with one of the older ones.

Bottom line is respect and co-operation ? the little ones need to learn to respect the older ones and the older ones need to respect the needs of the little ones and we all need to give and take and work together to make our family work.

I?ve written about this topic before: ?Structuring your day with Little Ones

Related idea: ?Everyone has a bad day ? Make it work for you

Exxon's CEO: Climate, energy fears overblown

NEW YORK (AP) ? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in U.S. oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry's ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East, the world's most important oil and gas-producing region.

"No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies," he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session after, he addressed three major energy issues: Climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

Andrew Weaver, chairman of climate modeling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson's characterization of climate modeling. He said modeling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely. And he said adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Steve Coll, author of the recent book "Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power," said he was surprised Exxon would already be talking about ways society could adapt to climate change when there is still time to try to avoid its worst effects. Also, he said, research suggests that adapting to climate change could be far more expensive than reducing emissions now. "Moving entire cities would be very expensive," he said.

Legislation or regulation that would help slow the emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon's profit.

DRILLING

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" have alarmed a public that doesn't understand drilling practices ? or math, science or engineering in general. He blamed "lazy" journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don't investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said. But those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life threatening nor long lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry's biggest challenge, he said, is "taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks."

ENERGY SECURITY

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. "Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded," he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn't matter where the U.S. gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the U.S. used only oil from North America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the U.S. and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the U.S. no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region's security, Tillerson said.

There are many different things you can do to cement healthy working relationships between team members and achieve your objectives for the exercise, such as:

Problem solving games involving hypothetical situations - i.e. 'this container is full of toxic waste. As a team, using these materials, plan a way you can safely get it off the premises'.

Trust exercises - i.e. guiding a blind-folded teammate through an obstacle course or maze.

Sports or outdoor activities - i.e. orienteering or raft building.

Students set new human-powered helicopter flight record

A team of University of Maryland engineering students built a human-powered helicopter that flew for 50 seconds, getting close to the 60 seconds required to win the $250,000 Igor Sikorsky Prize.

By Mounira Al Hmoud,?The Christian Science Monitor / June 26, 2012

Gamera II is the second human powered helicopter from the University of Maryland's Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center. Video evidence suggests the helicopter, piloted by Kyle Gluesenkamp, flew for 50 seconds!

A team of engineering students from the University of Maryland broke a new flight record in a human-powered aircraft. Pilot Kyle Gluesenkamp lifted his gymnasium-sized helicopter, Gamera II, about a foot off the ground for 50 seconds. Their record is still unofficial until the National Aeronautic Association rules on it.?

For a helicopter to be considered "human powered," it must be powered only by direct human energy (no batteries or giant rubber bands allowed). Wired's Rhett Allain calculates that it took the furiously pedaling?Gluesenkamp?about 1,000 watts of power to get Gamera II off the ground. By comparison, elite cyclists can briefly generate up to 2,000 watts of power. ?

The?Gamera II team discovered that adding hand cranks increased the power output up to 20 percent.

Gamera II?is a student design challenge inspired by the American Helicopter Society Sikorsky Prize. Created in 1980 in memory of the helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky, the $250,000 prize requires a craft to attain a height of three meters during a 60-second flight while remaining in a 10 meter square. The prize has not yet been won.

The current official world record is held by a craft named Yuri I, which in 1994 achieved an altitude of about eight inches for just under 20 seconds. Yuri means ?lilly,' in Japanese, and the craft was named for its flowery shape.

The first human-powered helicopter to lift off the ground was built in 1989 and christened the?Da Vinci III, after the?Renaissance?polymath who first conceived of such a craft.?

Gluesenkamp is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland's?Clark School's mechanical engineering department. The other pilots are Colin Gore, Ph.D. candidate in the Clark School's materials science and engineering department, and Denis Bodewits, assistant research scientist in the University of Maryland Department of Astronomy.

PFT: Chiefs' Berry says he's 100 percent healthy

yahoo_breessidelineGetty Images

The Saints reportedly are poised to make Drew Brees the highest-paid player in NFL history, and the Saints allegedly aren?t negotiating with Brees in good faith.

We?d hate to see how much money the Saints would be offering Brees if they were acting in good faith.

Lost in the contention that Brees? role in the 2011 labor talks are being used against Brees in his contract talks is the fact that the Saints have repeatedly made very significant offers to Brees.? In 2011, they made an offer that would have put Brees in the Peyton Manning/Tom Brady ballpark.? In February 2012, they applied the exclusive version of the franchise tag, which put Brees in line for $16.371 million this season, more than $1 million per game.? In March 2012, they offered another deal that would have made him the highest paid player in the league.? In June 2012, they upped the ante once again.

So where?s the bad faith?

Not giving a guy everything he wants isn?t bad faith.? Not blowing out a team?s salary cap for one player isn?t bad faith.

If the Saints aren?t happy with their most important player because of his role in the labor talks, then the other 31 teams presumably like him even less.? So bad faith would have been, at a minimum, using the non-exclusive version of the franchise tag, since no other team would have signed him to an offer sheet and given the Saints a pair of first-round picks if the Saints hadn?t matched.

Bad faith also would have been giving him no franchise tag at all, thrusting him onto a market full of teams that would have collectively lowballed him, as their way of blackballing him.

Drew knows deep down that the Saints aren?t sticking it to him, because of his role in the CBA talks or for any other reason.? That?s why the initial report from Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com regarding the union?s contention that the Saints are discriminating against Brees contains the ludicrous suggestion that ?The quarterback did not play a role in the decision . . . with the union moving forward of its own accord.?? Brees wants to squeeze the Saints with an unfounded claim without getting his hands dirty, so he?s hiding behind the notion that the NFLPA has decided on its own, without regard to the wishes of a member of its Executive Committee, to make an outlandish charge that the Saints, by offering consistently to make him the highest-paid player in the league, are screwing him.

Brees has built up plenty of equity in New Orleans and elsewhere over the years.? If Saints fans take the time to see through this one, it could all be gone in the blink of an eye.

None of this changes the fact that the Saints foolishly have delayed getting this deal done.? With coach Sean Payton suspended for the year and with the franchise otherwise in disarray, Brees? presence during the entire offseason program should have been regarded as critical to a successful effort in 2012 ? especially since the Saints? postseason performance hinges on home-field advantage unlike any other team in the league.

The Saints also had been leaking that Brees wants more money than he actually has demanded.? Stupid, yes.? Bad faith, no.

The Saints need Brees.? The Saints love Brees.? But his role in the CBA talks is irrelevant to the ongoing inability to work out a long-term deal, and Brees knows it.

Monsanto 3Q profit soars, maintains year view

(AP) ? A mild winter spurred farmers to sow crops earlier and in larger numbers, allowing seed company Monsanto Co. to reap a 35-percent higher profit in its fiscal third quarter.

The U.S. agricultural giant also maintained its full-year earnings forecast after boosting it last month.

The St. Louis company, which produces genetically engineered seeds and the herbicide Roundup, earned $937 million, or $1.74 per share, in the quarter ended in May. That's compared with $692 million, or $1.28 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 17 percent to $4.22 billion.

Monsanto's adjusted profit of $1.63 per share, which excludes a tax benefit, topped analysts' expectations of $1.55. Its sales figure also beat analysts' consensus view of $3.97 billion, according to FactSet.

Sales of corn seeds and traits, by far the company's biggest segment, rose 35 percent to $1.52 billion. Corn is used not just for food, but also for fuel, animal feed and syrup for soda.

Soybean seed and trait sales, the company's next largest segment, rose 15 percent to $698 million. Sales of vegetable seeds were the only declining segment.

Monsanto confirmed its adjusted profit forecast of $3.65 to $3.70 per share for the fiscal year. The company expects year-over-year ongoing earnings to grow up to 25 percent for the fiscal year that ends in August.

Nevada Governor an Online Gaming Pioneer | BingoLingo.com

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval said that Nevada took a big step forward last week when the state?s gambling commission awarded the first two online gaming licenses. Sandoval has been a pioneer in getting Nevada ready for online gambling. Last Thursday the Nevada Gaming Commission awarded online gambling licenses to Bally Technologies and Interna?tional Game Technology. (IGT) In an interview last Friday Sandoval said that since 2002 he and then Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Nylander worked on legislation that ?essentially provided a foundation for Nevada to get into Internet gaming.? At the time Sandoval was chairman of the Nevada Gaming Com?mission.

In 2011 as Governor Sandoval proposed legislation that directed Gaming Control to set up regulations for licensing internet gaming in the state. The legislation was completed and resulted in the issuance of the first two online gaming licenses. Sandoval said ?I can?t take all the credit? and added Assembly Judiciary Chairman William Horne guided the bill through committee and the lower house. Sandoval said that the licensing regulations combined with legislation that allows technological examination and certification of new gaming technologies are designed to keep Nevada the ?gold standard? of legal gambling. Sandoval said that the legislation allowing the examination of new gaming technologies was needed because the Gaming Control?s small technology staff was having trouble keeping up with the changes in gaming technology.

The backlog at Gaming Control was allowing new technologies to reach casinos in jurisdictions other than Nevada. Sandoval stated ?I?m determined that Nevada maintain its position as leader of gaming in the world.? Sandoval was asked by reporters about internet hacking and security concerns for internet gambling. Sandoval said the issue has been a top priority for the Gaming Policy Committee and Gaming Control. The Governor said the security programs are so good they can catch players cheating at an online poker table. Sandoval stated ?It will not allow minors access, and will ensure that bets are only taken in certain places.? The governor said that one long term goal is to have online gambling companies set up their servers, research and development departments in Nevada.

What does all this mean to online bingo players? If Nevada is successful other states are sure to follow and allow online gaming including online bingo. Nevada?s regulations could serve as a template for other states that want to implement intrastate online gaming. In addition to generating extra revenues in Nevada the development of the online gaming industry will create many good paying jobs.

Google: 400 million Android devices, one million activations a day

Google has just kicked off its I/O keynote with some big new numbers to share. It now says there are 400 million activated Android devices out there, and one million activations per day. That's up from the 100 million activated devices it announced at Google I/O last year, and 200 million it announced last fall, while the activations per day are up from the 900k it confirmed just earlier this month. As Google was quick to point out, that translates to about 12 devices activated every second, and it's happy to note that things are "definitely not slowing down."

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!
