Marcus Larson / News-Register
Suey Linzmeier has replaced Michael Eichman as Head Start director.

Sep 29, 2012

By Starla Pointer
Of the News-Register

Suey Linzmeier has been named executive director of Head Start of Yamhill County. She replaces Michael Eichman, who is retiring after 17 years in the post.

Linzmeier previously served as assistant director and coordinator of the Early Head Start program with the nonprofit, which operates centers in McMinnville, Dayton, Sheridan and Newberg. Before that, she served as a family educator and teacher at the Sheridan center.

Head Start is a federal- and state-funded program that promotes school readiness for children from low-income families. It is currently serving 415 children, pre-natal through age 4, in Yamhill County.

Its programs aim to enhance children?s social, cognitive and emotional development through services involving their health, nutrition, socialization and education. Staff members work closely with families as well as youngsters, focusing on parents as children?s first and most important teachers.

Linzmeier said the best part about Head Start is that it?s not a program just for children. It serves entire families.

?It?s a human development organization,? she said.

She said Head Start staff members work with parents to teach them the skills they need to improve themselves, as well as to become better parents.

Every family has to set goals. As a result, she said, last year 22 Head Start parents earned their GEDs, while others regained custody of children, made down payments on homes or started college.

?We?re the ones who believe in them,? she said. ?A lot of our families didn?t have good situations when they were growing up, and they need to learn how to be really strong parents. We help to teach them.?

Many Head Start parents go on to get good jobs, she said, and some find jobs with Head Start itself. In fact, she said, 30 percent of the local staff members started as parents in the program.

Linzmeier moved to Yamhill County in 2007 from Juneau, Alaska. She had worked in early childhood education during her 25 years there, serving as program manager for the Association for the Education of Young Children Southeast?s child care food program, adjunct professor at the University of Fairbanks and chapter founder of the Alaska Child Care Food Program Sponsor Network and Alaska Family Child Care Association Southeast.

She holds a degree in child development and family studies from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and a graduate certificate in infant toddler mental health from Portland State University.

As part of her work with Head Start of Yamhill County, Linzmeier has served as liaison to the Yamhill County Commission on Children and Family?s Early Childhood Coordinating Council. The council, a collaborative effort of several agencies, aims to ensure that all young children and their families have access to quality resources that support growth and development.

She also has helped Head Start win a federal grant to expand its services to 48 expectant families, as well as infants and toddlers.

Eichman, the former director, is still involved with Head Start on a contractual basis, as the agency considers development of additional facilities.

He said he is pleased with the choice of Linzmeier as his successor.

?She has been with the program long enough to have achieved measurable success with both Early Head Start and our Head Start program,? he said. ?Her leadership skills are impressive. She is clearly the right person at the right time in the right place.?

(AP) ? The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history ? a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed further light on the discreet, internal workings of the papal household.

In its first hearing in the case, the three-judge Vatican tribunal threw out some evidence gathered during the investigation of butler Paolo Gabriele, who is charged with aggravated theft. It also decided to separate Gabriele's trial from that of his co-defendant, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Gabriele is accused of taking the pope's correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI," was published to great fanfare in May.

Prosecutors have said Gabriele confessed to taking the documents because he wanted to expose the "evil and corruption" in the church. They quoted him as saying during an interrogation that he felt inspired by the Holy Spirit to inform the pope about the church's problems and that a "shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the church back on the right track."

Nuzzi on Saturday wished Gabriele well, tweeting "Good Luck, courageous Paoletto, we're with you." He referred to Gabriele by the diminutive nickname used by the pope and other members of the papal household.

The trial inside the intimate, austere courtroom was the highest-profile case to come before the Vatican judiciary since the 1929 founding of the Vatican city state, the world's smallest sovereign state. Media from around the world converged on St. Peter's Square to cover the case, which has attracted attention not so much because of the content of the documents but because they were stolen from the pope's desk and leaked, allegedly by one of Benedict's closest assistants.

On Saturday, the court said the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, had been called as a witness, testimony that is sure to attract attention given that Gaenswein rarely speaks in public much less about the details of the tight-knit papal family of which Gabriele formed part.

Other witnesses include one of the four consecrated women who take care of the pope's apartment, a monsignor in the Vatican secretary of state, the No. 2 Swiss Guard commander and the head of the Vatican police force.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre set the next hearing for Tuesday, when Gabriele will be questioned. He said he thought the whole trial could be wrapped up in four more hearings.

Gabriele faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. He has already asked to be pardoned by the pope, something most Vatican watchers say is a given.

Gabriele, 46, appeared calm but tense during the 2 hour, 15 minute hearing, frequently crossing his hands or clasping them in his lap. He wore a light gray suit and tie.

He sat alone on a bench on one side of the courtroom, following the proceedings impassively. During a break in the hearing, he chatted with his attorney, Cristiana Arru, and greeted journalists with a nod and a smile as he entered and exited.

Arru raised a series of objections at the start of the hearing, only some of which were accepted by the court. One concerned two jailhouse conversations Gabriele had with the head of the Vatican police force without his lawyers present. The judges declared both inadmissible. The content isn't public.

Arru also sought access to the report of a commission of cardinals appointed by the pope to investigate the leaks alongside Vatican magistrates. The court denied the request.

The attorney for co-defendant Claudio Sciarpelletti successfully petitioned to have his client's trial separated from that of Gabriele. Sciarpelletti wasn't in the court Saturday and his trial date wasn't set.

Neither Gabriele's wife nor any of his three children attended the hearing. Space for the public was limited; eight of the 18 seats were taken up by the journalists who followed the proceedings and then briefed the rest of the Vatican press corps afterward.

The courtroom itself was spare, with wood paneling along the walls, a gilded crest of the Holy See in the ceiling, a photograph of Benedict over the prosecutor's chair and a crucifix over the chair of the presiding judge. It's located in a four-story palazzo tucked behind St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican gardens.

Security was relaxed, with the guards at the tribunal entrance mostly concerned that none of the press or public brought in any recording devices: They even checked pens to make sure they couldn't record, and sequestered cell phones into safe boxes. No television or still cameras were allowed, except for Vatican media which filmed the first moments at the start of the hearing.

Given the content of the leaks and the Vatican's penchant for secrecy, the fact that the trial was open to the public and media might seem unusual. In fact, such trials in the Vatican's civil and penal tribunal are routinely public. They just don't happen very often or attract much attention. The Vatican's ecclesial courts on the other hand, which handle marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other matters of church law, remain firmly off-limits to outsiders.

In some ways, the willingness of the Vatican to proceed with the trial at all is an indication of its efforts to show new transparency in its inner workings. Benedict could have pardoned Gabriele as soon as he was arrested or charged, precluding any trial from getting off the ground. Instead he allowed the trial to go ahead, evidence of the "courage" the Vatican is showing to be more transparent, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has said.

He called such transparency unprecedented for the Vatican and likened it to the Holy See's recent decision to submit its financial institutions to outside scrutiny by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Which is the Most Effective Exercise For Weight Loss, Aerobics Or ...

?

I get this question a lot so it makes sense to write an article about it. To answer this question it would take more than an article but we will try to cover the basics in the next few lines.

Next to diet, what you eat, Exercise is the most important part of your weight loss plan. Most people will concentrate on either the diet or the fitness workout, but I believe they are equally important for a healthy life, fitness, losing and keeping the weight off. So which is the most Effective exercise to lose weight? Well to answer this question lets look at the two basic type of exercise routines so that we are all on the same page.

The first is resistance training, and this simply is lifting weights, and engaging different muscle group, in order to stress then so they will not only become stronger, more flexible but will grow, and I am not talking about body building type growth. Most people, women in particularly always say they do not want to lift weight because they do not want to look masculine or build bulky muscles. Believe me in order to reach to that level you have to lift a heck of a lot of weight, and eat a heck of a lot of protein. So we are just talking about toning up.

Resistance training is important because it forces your muscles to burn more fat for energy, this increases your metabolism and your body becomes more efficient at burning fat. So this type of exercise is critical for weight loss. Apart from the weight loss component, studies show that weight training strengthens the bones and prevents osteoporosis or weakening of the bone or loss of bone mass. Better muscle tone means less workout injuries, and the health benefits goes on and on.

So what about Aerobics workout? This is the second type of work out that I want to talk about. Aerobic exercise is the process of increasing the heart rate through a 15-20 minute sustains exertion thus increasing the oxygen levels in the blood stream and burning fat to fuel the increase energy require to sustain said exertion. If that went over your head then look at it this way, if you jog around the block for 15-22 minutes your heart rate will increase, and your body will require more oxygen for the increase energy required, this will force the body to suck in more air, (hence the deep breathing) more oxygen in the blood stream means more fat can be metabolized and burnt and fat burning is what we want.

Once again aerobics has multiple health benefits, such as lower cholesterol, increased the release of endorphins which gives you a feeling of well being and lowers the risk of depression, helps with insomnia, and have a general health benefit for the whole body.

Having said all of that, which exercises routine, is better? Is it resistance training or aerobics? You guessed my answer, they are both equally important.

They are so powerful in weight loss and keeping you in shape that imagine if you combined then in your workout? For optimal benefits you should do at least 35 min of cardio or aerobic activity per day, and that can take the form of swimming, running, biking, walking, roller blade, tennis, racket ball or a workout DVD. The important thing is to make sure it is sustained for at least 25-35 minute.

for weight training or resistance training your can do some push ups, pull ups, squats, bench press, arm curls or you can do a circuit style training where you work multiple muscle group within a 45 minute time frame. The goal is to put your muscles under pressure and push then to grow, this requires changing up the weights and increasing the intensity over time.

So there you have it, combine both type of workout into your weight loss plan and watch the weight melt away.

Why Hotels In Playa Del Carmen Are Great Places For Destination ...

Some people shy away from having destination weddings for several different reasons. One of the main reasons is because they worry about whether or not people will actually be able to make it. This is especially true if their families are concentrated in one particular area of the country. In this case, it is understandable if they want to go ahead and have the event in that area. On the other hand, there are cases where people have family and friends scattered all across the nation, with most of them living thousands of miles away from them. In this instance, it may be better to have the wedding in another city, state, or even country. This could make it easier for everyone to attend. Along with having this event in a different area, it would also be beneficial to host it in the establishment they will actually be staying in.

One of the reasons it is a good idea to host weddings at hotels in Playa del Carmen is because the place may offer a deal that will allow everyone to stay there at a discounted price. This would be very helpful to everyone, especially those who have to spend hundreds of dollars on transportation. Any amount of savings would be beneficial.

Another reason hotels in Playa del Carmen are great wedding venues is because they give family members a chance to bond. During the average wedding, most of the families do not see one another until the day of the ceremony. So, this only gives them a few hours to hang out and chat. On the other hand, if they are all staying in the same place, it will almost force them to be together. That is because they would be in close proximity to one another. In actuality, it could almost be like a mini family reunion. This type of closeness can also allow the opposite sides of the family to come together and get more familiar with one another.

Along with the aforementioned examples, hotels in Playa del Carmen are also wonderful wedding venues because everyone will already be on location. Therefore, there is a slimmer chance that they will be late for the event. This is especially important for people who have large wedding parties. Sometimes, it is hard to get everybody to meet up at a certain time and this could be due to a myriad of reasons, including traffic issues.

It is easy to see that hotels are not just beneficial for people who are looking for a place to stay during a vacation or out of town trip. However, these establishments can also be great wedding venues.

How will you get loan or perhaps loan?

Rating Score :

A?proval : 98.8 %.

Get Cash in : during the day

Benefits : No fax , No credit check , Fast cash ... and more !

Based on your problem of home, work status and profits, you'll be able to be entitled to a loan up to $1500, even though some creditors may loan no more than $500. You will have a chance to observe how much you be entitled to prior to accepting any kind of mortgage loan contract.

There is an important legitimate difference between a gift along with a bank loan. A really generous family member or even good friend could give you $5000 with regard to vehicle repairs, for example. In the event that there's no expectation associated with repayment, the money could be a present. The particular giver couldn't take legal action against regarding payment later on within a municipal suit. But when the loan provider designates the cash just like a bank loan and also the consumer pays back a dollar, the bucks can be viewed a real bank loan and also the loan provider may demand payment whenever. Small statements courts spend much of period identifying no matter whether the deal including cash will be a present or perhaps bank loan. For that reason paperwork is very important when creating private lending options to close friends or even family members.

The requirements to get that loan are pretty straight forward. If you are employed, having a regular monthly earnings regarding $800 or even more, this will let you bank account, you satisfy the fundamental requirements. A number of loan companies inside our network may have extra needs.

Money lending products are usually unguaranteed lending products eliminated on the next wage. Since they're short-term financial products, they could be little; different from $100 to $1500 and repayment comes to the next payday. They may be very useful for conquering a quick financial crisis, yet shouldn't be regarded as the long-term monetary option.

advance payday loans

Many loan programs tend to be addressed through finance institutions or any other professional loan providers. They may make use of a various criteria to find out if your potential customer is actually skilled for a financial loan. Past credit rating is practically always considered, along with current income and assets. The aim of the credit can also be an issue-a established expense opportunity may have much more appeal compared to a good misdirected idea for any new cafe. One particular essential point could be the earnings in order to credit card debt percentage through the client. Could the customer manage to pay the bank loan back along with interest? Professional loan companies generally 'sell' income, so consumers should be aware simply how much financing actually 'costs' in relation to real money.

Matrix One drops to $60

Well, the Matrix One isn't becoming any more attractive spec-wise as the days pass, but Direct Merchandise Marketing believes they can keep up with the low-priced big boys by under-cutting them even further. If a $90 retail sticker wasn't enough to convince you that the A8-powered ICS slab deserved your attention, maybe a drop to $60 will change your tune. The 7-inch WVGA tablet is now an impressively thrifty $59.99, though, after tax and shipping the total tops $70. Still, its impossible to deny its bargain value.

(AP) ? Phoenix Mercury president Amber Cox is an avid user of social media.

She had just witnessed one of the greatest moments in team history when Phoenix won the WNBA draft lottery Wednesday night, earning the No. 1 pick and the chance to select Baylor's Brittney Griner.

Cox wanted to share the news with fans and coach Corey Gaines, who was in the television studio waiting for the draft order to be unveiled. Instead, she had to wait two hours until the results were broadcast on TV for the first time in league history. Cox and the other team executives who participated in the lottery were sequestered in a room, unable to access their phones or computers.

"It was tough, but it was fun to watch his reaction too, on TV," Cox said. "Corey's usually a cool customer and doesn't show any emotion, but he had a hard time holding that one in."

Cox was cool herself when the winning combination ? 4, 5, 6, 14 ? was drawn. There was no loud cheer or fist pump; she just sat there quietly taking in the moment.

The Mercury (7-27) had the second-worst record in the league this season and were assigned 276 of the 1,000 possible lottery combinations. Fortunately for Cox and the Mercury, one of those combos came up first.

"We're really excited. It means a lot to our fans, it means a lot to our organization," Cox said. "We're just really excited and kind of speechless at the moment. We came into the draft lottery today, Corey and I, with no expectations and, again, like he said, we knew that anyone we would be able to add to the pieces we already have would be good.

"This is obviously icing on the cake."

Chicago will pick second and Tulsa third. Washington, which had the worst record in the league, will pick fourth. The Mystics (5-29) had a 44-percent chance to win the top pick. Only four times in the 11 previous lotteries has the team with the worst record secured the top pick, and that hasn't happened since 2009.

Mystics chief operating officer Greg Bibb had a homemade pouch with him in the lottery room. It didn't help.

Neither Gaines nor Cox would commit to selecting Griner after the lottery results were announced.

"Griner has a unique skill set," Cox said. "We'll look at the class and it's our job over the next few months to figure out what's the best fit for us."

Griner, though, is a once-in-a-lifetime talent. The 6-foot-8 Baylor star is an unbelievable shot blocker and also can play above the rim. She helped guide Baylor to a national championship last year and the first 40-0 season in college basketball history. The reigning Associated Press player of the year will try to lead the Lady Bears to a second straight championship when the season starts next month.

"We like to fast break and you need to rebound and play defense to get out and run," said Gaines, smiling. "Obviously she can block shots and rebound the ball well."

Griner headlines a talented class. Delaware's Elena Delle Donne led the nation in scoring last season and is a versatile 6-foot-5 guard who can score from almost anywhere on the court. Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins has guided the Irish to the past two national championship games and is one of the most followed female athletes on Twitter.

"They all are very different players and can do different things for us," Cox said.

Phoenix was plagued by injuries most of the season. Star Diana Taurasi played in only eight games and Penny Taylor missed the entire year while recovering from an ACL injury. Candice Dupree also missed 21 games because of a knee injury.

"This was a difficult season with all the injuries we had," Gaines said. "The players this year tried so hard and now the texts are coming in from them. They are ready to come back and excited."

The Mercury have had the first pick in the draft two other times, including 2004 when they drafted Taurasi.

This was the first time that the lottery was shown on television. In the past, the lottery had been held later in the calendar year behind closed doors at a league meeting.

"This worked out great," WNBA President Laurel Richie said. "It creates a buzz and gets people talking now for the next few months until the draft in April."

'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter ?Not Shocked? By Johnny ...

Sons of Anarchy Johnny Lewis Dead Kurt Sutter

Frederick M. Brown, Getty Images / FX

Earlier this morning, tragic and surprising news broke that one-time ?Sons of Anarchy? star Johnny Lewis had died in a bizarre incident where the actor beat his 81-year-old landlady to death, got in an altercation with several men and died in a fall from the home in which he?d rented a room. Though the investigation is still on-going, ?Sons of Ancarhy? creator Kurt Sutter has issued his own response to the news, for which he grieves, but claims not to be surprised by.

While the ?Sons of Anarchy? cast and crew, as well as the family, friends and fans of actor Johnny Lewis continue to grieve for his death, series creator and Lewis? one-time boss Kurt Sutter had some unique words regarding the man?s passing. Taking to his Twitter account, Sutter explained that while Lewis? loss was tragic, it was not unforeseen.

not sure if folks know this yet, but johnny lewis (halfsack) died last night.? the sad irony of it happening two days after Opie?s death is not lost on me. it was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way. i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not.

i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it?s [a] day [of] mourning, but it?s also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying.

Sutter refers to the ?irony? of recent headlines surrounding ?Sons of Anarchy,? in which a beloved on-screen character and member of the SAMCRO organization was shockingly killed off. In real life, Lewis himself portrayed Kip ?Half-Sack? Epps on the series for the first two seasons, before the character was killed off at Lewis? request. Reportedly, Lewis had ?creative differences? with Sutter, and wished to be let go from his contract.

Sutter likely has a great deal of insight into the actor?s demise, in which police are investigating claims that the actor was on drugs at the time of his death, and facing a number of recent criminal charges.

Elsewhere, the investigation continues into the tragic loss.

News: Acquisition of an institutional Lecture Capture and Live ...

Memo also ?available on-line at
http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/public/pdadc/2012_to_2013/13.htm

PDAD&C#13, 2012-13

To: ????PDAD&C
From: ??Dr. Avi Hyman, Director, Academic & Collaborative Technologies
Date: ??September 21, 2012
Re: ????Acquisition of an institutional Lecture Capture and Live Webcasting
solution

We are pleased to announce the recent acquisition of Echo360 software as an
institutional Lecture/Video Capture and Live Webcasting solution.

Echo360 is industry leading lecture capture technology that has been
deployed in hundreds of schools and companies worldwide. It enables both
video-on-demand and live web-based broadcasting in teaching and program
delivery. It can also be used in non-teaching scenarios (for example, public
service announcements).

Our site license allows for university-wide use of specialized software on
teaching stations, a version of the software for use on personal computers,
software for converting other formats into the Echo format, and software for
specialized appliances ? all at no cost to departments or divisions as a
result of funding from the Office of the Provost.

The software for the teaching stations can, among other features, be
integrated with PowerPoint and other display technologies and includes
scheduling capabilities. The personal computer version of the software will
be rolled out in stages, first to faculty and staff, and eventually to
students as well. The personal capture version will allow individuals to
produce high quality video productions from their offices, homes,
conferences or meetings. ?It works particularly well with camera-equipped
laptops.

Departments interested in higher end recording capability or live web-based
broadcasting can purchase a specialized all-in-one recording appliance at
greatly reduced cost. Software to run the appliances is covered by the site
license.

Lectures and other events recorded with the new software can be hosted and
distributed in a variety of ways. ?This new initiative includes a
partnership with the University of Toronto Libraries for enhancing the use
of the University?s video distribution service, MyMedia, which is also
available to departments at no charge.

As more of our academic programs begin to leverage blended, inverted and
online learning, having this suite of lecture capture software should be a
significant boon to program delivery; the goal of deploying an institutional
standard across the University is to develop a real and shared pedagogical
and technical expertise.

An implementation team with representatives from the Centre for Teaching
Support & Innovation, Information + Technology Services, the University of
Toronto Libraries, and the Office of Space Management will be working with
divisions on getting the new solutions deployed as quickly as possible,
including the software distribution strategy. Our current lecture capture
software, Camtasia Relay, will continue to be supported as a transition
strategy for the foreseeable future as well.

More information on this initiative and other related academic technology
initiatives will be posted at http://uoft.me/edtech and IT staff will be
updated via regular communication channels. Specific queries can be directed
to Peter Eden from I+TS, who will be managing the implementation phase of
this project (ati@utoronto.ca).

Sikorsky to close upstate NY plant, cut 570 jobs

BIG FLATS, N.Y. (AP) ? Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., citing declining military budgets and a tough economy, said it will close its plant in upstate New York and eliminate all 570 jobs.

Employees at the 5-year-old facility, who have seen their ranks dwindle from a peak of 1,300, were told Monday that the plant would close as of Dec. 31 and its work transitioned to Sikorsky's West Palm Beach, Fla., facility.

"Faced with these difficult economic conditions we must eliminate excess production capacity and increase operational efficiencies to remain competitive," said Paul Jackson, spokesman for the Stratford, Conn.-based subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The helicopter maker and military contractor announced in September 2011 that it was trimming its worldwide workforce of 18,000 by about 540 jobs. Jackson cited "moderating growth" in the U.S. and international economies and the impact on commercial and military customers.

The Military Completion Center in Chemung County customizes military helicopters sold to foreign governments. Sikorsky bought the plant from Schweizer Aircraft Corp. in 2004. Three years later, the company opened a new $15 million, 100,000-square-foot facility near the Elmira Corning Regional Airport.

Sikorsky also has large-scale operations in Connecticut, Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin, as well as Poland.

Sikorsky posted $1.62 billion in net sales for the second quarter of 2012, down 9 percent from the same period in 2011. Its signature Black Hawk has been a workhorse for the U.S. military to strike targets and ferry troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sales at Sikorsky have more than doubled to $6.7 billion since 2005.

Report: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014

Report Sharp cutting 11,000 jobs, 19% of its workforce, by March 2014

Japanese electronics giant Sharp is reportedly planning a major restructuring to bring the company back to profitability by 2014, as reported by Kyodo News. Said restructuring will see Sharp cut nearly 11,000 (10,966) jobs from its 57,170-person workforce by March 2014 -- just under 20 percent of all employees -- and sell off various assets, resulting in ¥213.1 billion ($2.7 billion) of much needed capital from lenders. Named assets to be sold include international manufacturing plants, and shares in other Japanese electronics company, Toshiba. The company also plans on shuttering its international manufacturing plants, as well as once again cutting employee wages.

So, what's gonna save Sharp from more turmoil? A rethinking of its LCD TV business, apparently, as well as a "strengthening" of the company's smartphone LCD offerings. Sharp's also moving away from solar batteries, selling off its US-based solar firm Recurrent Energy LLC. Company prez Takashi Okuda will head up the massive restructuring, leading an "emergency management committee" starting in October. All of this adds up to Sharp expecting a return to profitability by next April. You'll forgive us if we're a bit wary of that prediction, but our best wishes are with those impacted by the chaos.

'Homeland' and 'Modern Family' big winners at Emmy Awards

'Homeland' also won top acting awards for Claire Danes and Briton Damian Lewis as Showtime's first-ever best drama honoree prevented 'Mad Men' from winning its fifth straight best drama Emmy.

"Modern Family" continued its run as television's most honored comedy at the Emmys, winning the best comedy award for the third year in a row, while the terrorism thriller "Homeland" won critical praise and the best drama Emmy.

"Homeland" also won top acting awards for Claire Danes and Briton Damian Lewis as Showtime's first-ever best drama honoree prevented "Mad Men" from winning its fifth straight best drama Emmy.

Another Brit, Maggie Smith, won for best supporting actress in a drama series for "Downton Abbey."

Once showered with honors, "Mad Men" set a record Sunday with 17 nominations and zero wins, said Tom O'Neil of the Gold Derby website, which follows awards shows.

"We didn't make our show just to undermine them," Danes noted backstage. "We're delighted and thrilled and a little startled by this. I don't think anyone expected to be recognized like this right off the bat, but it feels pretty nice."

Lewis took note of "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston, winner of three best actor Emmys who had been trying for a fourth on Sunday.

"I was quite convinced he would be walking up tonight," he said.

"Modern Family" also brought a directing honor for co-creator Steve Levitan and acting trophies for Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet. They were already conscious that such success bring an inevitable backlash.

"I'm praying that everybody doesn't get sick of us," Levitan said backstage.

Across the theater was a reminder that things change: one-time Emmy darling Tina Fey sitting trophy-free as her show "30 Rock" is coming to an end. She was one of the quickest people to bolt from her seat and head for the exit when the three-hour telecast ended.

Along with the awards, there were a few cultural moments that lit up social media:

? Host Jimmy Kimmel and Tracy Morgan conspiring to start a rumor that Morgan had passed out onstage.

? Curve-accentuating dresses worn by Kat Dennings of "2 Broke Girls," Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" and Christina Hendricks of "Mad Men."

? Jon Stewart punctuating his acceptance speech with an f-bomb, resulting in the only bleep of the evening.

Stewart's "The Daily Show" is one of the Emmy Awards' sure things. It won the award for best variety show for the 10th straight year. CBS' "The Amazing Race" won its ninth award for best reality show in 10 years.

Probably the least-predicted winner was Jon Cryer of CBS' "Two and a Half Men" as best comic actor. He's won the best supporting actor award in the past, deferring to Charlie Sheen. But with Ashton Kutcher replacing Sheen in the cast last season, Cryer moved up in class. Even he was taken aback by the win, saying he figured two-time trophy winner Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" would get it.

"Don't panic, people. Something has clearly gone terribly wrong. I'm stunned," Cryer said after the award was announced.

HBO's freshman comedy "Veep" received mixed reviews, but Emmy voters loved veteran actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the best comedy actress award for her turn as a caustic U.S. vice president.

Julianne Moore's uncanny take on Gov. Sarah Palin in the TV movie "Game Change," about the 2008 presidential campaign, earned her best actress honors. The political film from HBO was also honored in the best miniseries-movie category.

"I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down," Moore said, beaming.

Sofia Vergara and Heidi Klum ramped up the sizzle Sunday night on the Emmy Awards red carpet that already had TV's biggest stars talking about just how hot they were because of the sweltering temperatures in Los Angeles.

Vergara wore a teal gown by Zuhair Murad with beads all over and a cutout reverse halter neckline, and Klum chose a seafoam-colored gown by Alexandre Vauthier with plunging Vs from every angle on the top and super-high slits that left very little in the middle.

They helped fuel the trend toward bright, bold color that was also worn by pregnant Claire Danes in strapless daffodil-yellow Lanvin, Julianne Moore in a long-sleeve, stretchy gown by Raf Simons for Christian Dior and Nicole Kidman in a blue-on-white-beaded gown by Antonio Berardi. All brought bona fide fashion credibility to the Nokia Theatre, even if they weren't necessarily the favorites.

Hayden Panettiere plucked her sari-style Marchesa straight from the runway, and Ginnifer Goodwin's flame-red-on-sheer-champagne strapless gown by Monique Lhuillier announced there's a new generation of style stars to reckon with.

Goodwin "went out on a limb ? and it could have gone wrong ? but it was great," said Stacy London, co-host of TLC's "What Not to Wear" and co-founder of Style for Hire, a personal fashion service. "It had the biggest impact on me."

Lhuillier had a banner night with Julie Bowen's strapless, trumpet-hem gown and Padma Lakshmi's orange strapless dress.

Goodwin and Klum also were early favorites of Louise Roe, Glamour editor-at-large and "Fashion Star" host. She wasn't crazy about Elisabeth Moss' printed, peplumed Dolce & Gabbana gown, which she said had a little too much "fussy detail."

And, Roe said, Emily VanCamp could have gone edgier than her still-lovely J. Mendel gown with pleats and hints of sexy sheer fabric. "She's young and has a killer body ? she could have played around a bit more."

Hal Rubenstein of InStyle magazine, however, saw the beauty of VanCamp's gown up close and ? like Moore's gown, which was Simons' red-carpet debut for Dior ? needed to be appreciated for the details. "Julianne's will be the one to remember," he said. "It's a lot ? and it's a blazing, flaming color ? but if you saw the dress, the construction was extraordinary."

Moore said before the show: "I love the color. It's so fresh."

It didn't hurt that she also got to wear European-cut diamond earrings, weighing in at 5 carats each, and an 8.5-carat Art Deco bracelet ? both by Fred Leighton.

Vergara's gown was over the top and not as sophisticated as some of her earlier red-carpet looks, but she has mastered a va-va-voom character and she consistently gives the audience what they want, the experts said. "If Sofia Vergara showed up in a tuxedo or a boatneck gown in sable brown, you'd be furious," Rubenstein said.

When stars go for gowns that they seem more comfortable in, which is itself a trend, they look better, Rubenstein explained. Julianna Margulies is someone who always owns her dress and the Giambattista Valli strapless brocade floral fell into her pattern of making fashionable choices.

London felt the same way about Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her dark red, ruched and draped Vera Wang that she paired with Irene Neuwirth's one-of-a kind black opal and rose-cut diamond earrings set with turquoise. "She can show the little girls how to do it. She's nuanced and talented. You never feel like her acting and you always like her, and I feel that way about her dress choices."

There was plenty of red to go with the carpet, including a cleavage-baring Kat Dennings of "2 Broke Girls" in J. Mendel and Tina Fey, who has mastered the awards-show look as she nears the end of the run of "30 Rock," in a dark red strapless with gold bust details by Vivienne Westwood.

It was good to see some unexpected red-carpet players such as Westwood, who also dressed Kerry Washington; Andrew Gn who designed Connie Britton's silver halter; and even Jason Wu on Jessica Pare. Wu designed Michelle Obama's famous inaugural gown but isn't consistent on the red carpet.

One of Mrs. Obama's other favorites, Naeem Khan, scored with a bare, beaded halter gown with orange ballskirt worn by Leslie Mann.

Other impressive Emmys veterans were Amy Poehler, in a beaded, V-neck halter, and Edie Falco, whose navy-in-front, white-in-back gown was made a little sexier with sheer strips on the bodice. "Edie Falco looks 10 years younger from the last time I saw her," London said.

Zooey Deschanel played to her funny-girl, vintage-style, kooky-sexy character in an ice blue strapless gown by Reem Acra that had a poufy full skirt made of tiers of sharply cut tulle layers. She had a manicure with little TV sets on her thumbnails ? perhaps the kind of thing "E!" had in mind for its mani-cam that had stars walking their fingers down a tiny red carpet.

Kiernan Shipka, the young star of "Mad Men" who wore a Zac Posen duchess satin party dress ? sounded like the fashionista she's become when she said, "I love the silhouette." Her co-star January Jones wore a Posen gown that tapped into the runway trend of a complicated harness bodice and Christina Hendricks wore a belted metallic strapless by Christian Siriano.

"Homeland's" Morena Baccarin strapless bodice gown with probably the deepest, sexiest neckline of the night was a bit of a marvel to London. "There is not any give in that dress. I can't understand how she'll sit." It certainly allowed her $58,000 dangling white gold, platinum and diamond drop earrings shine.

London gave credit to Lucy Liu to pulling off a heavy metallic mesh gown by Versace. She made it look fairly effortless, London said.

She did not, however, love Kristen Wiig's "sensible shoes" that went with her Balenciaga lingerie-style lace dress. "You get to wear sensible shoes every other day. This isn't the day."
